Modem Tune Up
Have you ever wondered why your 33.6 modem sometimes connects at 28.8 or 14.4? Are
downloads taking longer at home than at the office? Or does your modem suddenly hang
up and lose the connection when you're surfing the Web?
Don't blame your computer, your modem, or your Internet service provider. The problem
may be "telephone line noise;" static, hiss, radio and electrical interference
that causes your modem's error-correction logic to kick in, which reduces your connection
speed.
Last week Australian Protective Electronics, in Denton, Texas, released the results
of an independent study which claims the company's ModemGuard telephone line filter
restores modems to optimal performance when telephone line noise is present. Just
plug the $55 UL listed device into your electrical and telephone lines to kill most
line noise problems.
I've tested the product, and it seems to work as advertised. Complete information
is available at http://www.modemguard.com.
