Apple Books $500K in Online Orders
It was 10 years overdue and 10 times over-promoted, but Apple Computer's new Internet
store roared out of the gate last week, racking up 4.4 million hits, and taking in
$500,000 in orders, in its first 12 hours online.
The Apple Store's grand opening comes hot on the heels of the company's renewed partnership
with the country's #1 computer retailer, CompUSA, which agreed to reinvigorate it's
Macintosh departments in 40 major markets. All of this is part of Apple acting CEO
Steve Jobs' strategy to bring the company's sales channels in line with the dominant
Windows PC model.
Time will tell if the online Apple Store can sustain it's momentum in the cutthroat
mail-order marketplace. Almost immediately after the Apple Store opened it's virtual
doors, competing Mac mail-order companies slashed prices and spiffed-up bundles,
putting even more pressure on Apple's beleaguered bottom line.
