Instant Messaging On The Web
Instant messaging is coming to the World Wide Web. Last week, 40 leading industry
vendors, including Microsoft, 3Com, Connectix, and Cisco, proposed an open standard
for Internet-based instant messaging. The proposal was submitted to the Internet
Engineering Task Force, an independent body which establishes and maintains certain
Internet standards.
The "rendezvous protocol," also known as RVP, will allow users to create
personal "buddy lists" that identify virtually anyone surfing the Internet.
Click a button, and two or more users can establish instant private chat sessions.
The chat sessions can include text, audio, and video. RVP differs from America Online's
instant messaging service, which only works with other AOL users, and doesn't support
audio or video Internet communications.
