A BETTER CUP O' JAVA

Are you tired of seeing "Java errors" pop-up in your Web browser? Wondering what Java is, and why it doesn't work in your computer? Java is a popular programming language used to dress up and automate Web sites.

Programmers like to use Java because, in theory, a Java program written on a Macintosh should run unchanged on a Windows PC, a Unix workstation, or any other computer. In practice, however, Java programs often crash, because there are many different versions floating around the Web. But that's about to change.

This week, the world's most influential standards body -- the International Organization for Standardization -- voted to allow Sun Microsystems, the company that invented Java, to submit it's Java technologies for consideration as a worldwide standard.

If Java is approved as a global standard, its possible Java's fundamental incompatibilities will be all but ironed out. Web surfers will be able to hop from site to site, without being slowed down by Java system crashes.
