STUDY:
HOME PC MARKET EXPLODES
If you think the Internet is slow now, just wait until after the new year, when an
expected 1.5 million new computer users will be poised to go online. That according
to a study just released from market researchers International Data Corporation and
A.C. Nielsen.
The two firms surveyed over 12,000 computer shoppers in November and December, and
determined the number of new computers heading into homes this holiday season will
double over last year, to 1.5 million.
Almost half of the new computers projected to be purchased for Christmas and Hanukkah
giving will be bought by first-time buyers, 52% of whom plan to spend between $750
and $1,250 for their new system. Of those, 62% have total household incomes of $35,000
or less.
Interestingly, less than 16% of repeat buyers are targeting machines under $1000,
choosing instead to move up to more powerful PCs costing $2,000 or more. Final results
of the survey, which continues through December, will be published in early 1998.
