Netizens Flip Over Fcc Proposal
Netizens rallied this week to fight an evil conspiracy between
telecommunications carriers and the Federal Communications Commission. A
widely circulated e-mail, titled "FCC to Charge for E-Mail Usage," warned
users that local telephone companies filed a FCC proposal that would result
in per-minute charges for Internet access.
Users were encouraged to e-mail to the FCC to protest the proposal. But it
was all a wasted battle cry, because the alarming message was a hoax. While
the FCC did ask for comments on this issue over a year ago, it ruled
against assessing additional charges for Internet access, and closed the
proceeding.
Mary Beth McKarick is an FCC spokesperson: "We're getting a ton of calls. I
normally don't handle this issue, but I'm helping out with the phone calls,
because everyone is reading the e-mail." The agency also posted a FAQ to
it's Web site, at http://www.fcc.gov.
