New Microsoft Tool Wires Java To Windows
Microsoft next week will roll out its first major upgrade of Visual J++, the company's
flagship Java programming tool. The announcement will come at the Internet World
trade show in Los Angeles on Wednesday, and will kick off the company's most aggressive
effort yet to lock Java into Microsoft's Windows platform.
Java is a popular Internet computer language that lets businesses to build programs
once, and run them on any computer, from the smallest handheld PC, to Macintoshes
or Windows PCs, on up to the largest mainframe.
But Java's portability threatens Microsoft's industry dominance for one simple reason:
Java programs don't need a Windows PC to run. Sources say Microsoft's new Visual
J++ release combats Java's portability by adding dozens of new features, wizards,
and technologies that hard-wire Java programs to computers running Microsoft's Windows
operating system.
