Don't Lick the Software
You can buy nearly anything over the Internet today. There are hundreds of
virtual Web stores that sell everything from flowers, chocolates, perfumes,
and jewelry; to clothing and furniture, toys and sporting goods, greeting
cards, books and CDs, stereo equipment; and of course, computers.
You can even buy a car over the Internet, without ever setting foot in a
dealer showroom. But no matter what you buy through your computer, you
always have to wait for it to be delivered. Until now.
This week the US Postal Service approved the first program that lets you
buy stamps over the Internet. The software, from E-Stamp Corporation, in
Palo Alto, CA, prints the electronic stamp directly on your envelope, using
any computer printer.
The stamps contains a digital code that makes them nearly impossible to
counterfeit without detection. The service is expected to be on-line later
this year, and should cost under $300.
