Can't hack this policy
Lloyd's of London is now offering computer users insurance protection from hackers,
crackers, computer viruses, and accidental erasures. Last week, the company started
offering policies of up to $50 million in coverage to protect enterprise shops against
financial losses that result from illegal or just plain stupid tampering with computer
systems.
But before the insured can collect, they have to open their systems up to Lloyd's
technicians, who will first try to recover the lost data or repair damaged systems.
One security expert, convicted ex-hacker "Captain Zap," aka Ian Murphy,
president of IAM Secure Data Systems in Philadelphia, questions the value this and
other policies that are sure to follow Lloyd's lead.
Murphy points out that it's tough to place a value on a things like databases, documents,
and other electronic information, not to mention to the costs associated with downtime
and reconstructing damaged systems. And that means backups are still the best insurance.
"It's much easier to apologize than to get permission."

"bug" to describe a software defect
