"Not saving anybody any money"

June 04, 1998

That's one big meatball!

What do K-mart and Godzilla have in common? Both agree that size does matter. This week K-mart announced it was firing up what will be the world's third largest data warehouse, a colossal centralized database that, when completed, will exceed 8 terabytes in capacity.

That's 8 trillion bytes, the equivalent of 8000 one gigabyte hard drives. The system will be based on NCR's Teradata database software and two NCR WorldMark servers. The giant database will slurp in virtually all of K-mart's retail data from every store in the country.

The consolidated information system will empower local store managers to keep hot selling items in-stock, identify and quickly purge slow moving SKUs, and increase store sales. And in a new twist, K-mart's vendors will also have unfettered access to big bad database, and will be treated as an extension of K-mart's purchasing department.

It's the ultimate in supply chain integration.
