PC REPORT
Compliments of Rich Levin's PC ALERT service (http://24.3.97.12)
May 30, 1998
You may already be a winner
Thousands of users are getting an e-mail surprise. An urgent message from PC Mall,
a nationally respected mail order vendor, tells users they've just won a free USRobotics
X2 modem.
The message explains how PC Mall is "randomly giving selected Internet users"
free modems. To claim the prize, just reply with a credit card number to cover the
modest $4 shipping and handling charge. Skeptical? Just hit PC Mall's Web site, and
the instant winner contest rules are in plain view.
But users who responded to the announcement got something they didn't bargain for:
Their virtual pockets had just been picked. While PC Mall is running a daily prize
giveaway, the company isn't sending the e-mail messages. They were devised by an
Internet scam artist to do nothing more than collect credit card numbers.
