READ ALL ABOUT IT
Microsoft last week said the next version of its flagship database, SQL Server 7,
was shipped to over 50,000 testers, making it the broadest database beta test program
in the history of the universe.
Media accounts echoed Microsoft's line, and so now people think there are 50,000
testers pounding bugs out of new database. But the real news was how many reporters
and readers were taken in by Microsoft's carefully worded press blitz.
The actual number of core beta sites: a whopping ... 12. These "early adopter"
sites will be joined by another 3000 "active" beta sites, to form the company's
true beta team. And the other 46988 testers?
Members of Microsoft's Developer Network (MSDN) program, a subscription service for
software updates. Microsoft officials admit there are no guarantees that subscribers
will perform any testing whatsoever, or even load the CD.
