MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES OFFICE 2K

Microsoft this week announced Office 2000, the next generation of the company's flagship office productivity software suite. The upgrade, expected to ship in late 1999, lets users save documents as Web pages, using Office 2000's "Save As" feature.

This makes it easy to post documents to a Web site, and to share spreadsheets, presentations, forms, and letters with users who don't have the Office 2000 suite installed. Once a document is saved as a Web page, users need only a Web browser to view the shared pages.

Microsoft is also tightening Office's compound document ability, to make editing friendlier and more intuitive to a generation of users weaned on Web browsers. For example, clicking the edit command on a Web page component launches the program that created the data, such as Excel or PowerPoint. Users can then edit the document, and save it back as a Web page.

The first beta version of Office 2000 will be released to 20,000 beta testers next month.
