MYSTERIES OF THE REGISTRY REVEALED
Back in the bad old days of MS-DOS, it was actually pretty easy to
configure your computer. All of the computer's startup commands were stored
in two easily accessible text files, AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.
Modern Windows PCs use something called the Registry, an extensive
hierarchical database of hardware and software settings. Tuning the
Registry can speed up your computer and Internet connections, solve
problems, and enable secret Windows features.
But doing so requires a special program, called the Registry Editor, and a
basic understanding of programming. That is, until today. Now there are two
books that provide superb documentation of the Registry's inner secrets.
"Inside the Windows 95 Registry," from O'Reilly & Associates, and the
"Windows NT Registry, A Settings Reference," from New Riders, both provide
detailed, yet completely understandable road maps to the Registry's
powerful features.
You'll find both books at your favorite computer book store or dealer.
