Ken's Korner Bulletin
1st Media Workshop a Hit!
Conference Asks for Encore
by Ken Fermoyle
The first User Group Media Workshop held July 10 in San Diego ranked high with attendees,
so high that organizers of the APCUG (Association of PC User Groups) Southwest Regional
Convention asked for a repeat next year. ìI hoped it would be well received,"
said Ken Fermoyle, who put together the Workshop, ìbut I wasnít prepared
for the very, very enthusiastic reaction to both sessions. Now Iím looking forward
more than ever to doing it again next October in Florida."
. . . He also reported that there were so many requests
for material used in the Workshop that he may produce a CD that includes his slide
show presentation, material included in the Resource Kit and more. "We prepared
50 Resource Kits and ran out of them before my presentation even started! I spent
a whole day e-mailing Kit material to requesters when I got back to my office."
. . . The Media Workshop idea was conceived last winter
by Fermoyle, writer of the syndicated Kenís Korner column, which now goes out
monthly to some 225 editors and webmasters.
. . . "Our hope is that the Workshops will benefit
user group editors and webmasters by giving those with little media background a
better grasp of publishing fundamentals, and by serving as refresher courses for
more experienced attendees."
. . . Each Workshop includes a presentation on basics
by Fermoyle, whose career as a writer, editor and journalist spans 50+ years, followed
by an interactive panel discussion of media-related topics, solutions and techniques.
The hope is that this combination of education on the nuts and bolts of publishing
and an interchange of ideas and experiences between panelists and the audience will
prove beneficial to everyone involved.
. . . The first Workshop originally was to be in Florida
on October 6 at the Doubletree Resort & Conference Center, Kissimmee (Orlando
area). Rick Altman, founder and host of the CorelWorld Conferences, graciously offered
the use of a seminar room for the event. The July Workshop was added with the cooperation
of Judy Taylour, an organizer of the Southwest Conference.
. . . Another Media Workshop is tentatively scheduled
for next April or May in Las Vegas. ìBased on the success of the first one in
San Diego, I think itís a definite possibility," Fermoyle reports. ìIt
appears that there may be a suitable meeting place available at no cost, a critical
factor since this is strictly a non-profit endeavor. I pay my own travel expenses
and panelists are volunteers, also."
. . . Anyone interested in more information on the Media
Workshops or the proposed CD can contact Ken at kfermoyle@earthlink.net.
