Columnist Plans Media Workshop
For Florida User Group Members
by Ken Fermoyle
A regular contributor to more than 200 User Group (UG) newsletters and websites will
lead a free Media Workshop on Wednesday, October 6, 1999 in Kissinnee at the Doubletree
Resort & Convention Center.
Aim of the Workshop will be "to improve UG communications media and explore
the problems and opportunities created by new technologies," explains Ken Fermoyle,
who writes the popular Ken's Korner column.
"The Workshop will be open to all Florida UG members interested in publishing
and graphics but our primary target audience will be editors, webmasters, DTP/graphics
SIG leaders and UG officers tasked with public relations or other communication duties.
"The Workshop is made possible because Rick Altman, founder and host of the
CorelWORLD User Conferences, has graciously offered us the use of conference facilities
at no charge. CorelWORLD '99 runs October 3-8 at the DoubleTree.
"I plan to attend the Corel Conference and mentioned to Rick that I would love
to visit all of the 60-plus User Groups in Florida while I was there, but it just
wouldn't be possible," reports Fermoyle. "Rick immediately said: `Why not
invite them to visit you at the conference? You can use one our seminar rooms and
hold your own meeting, workshop or seminar.' Which was an offer I couldn't refuse!"
Altman has since added extra goodies. One is a Sweepstakes in which a lucky Florida
UG member will receive a free passport to CorelWORLD 99 ($875 value). See sidebar
for details or visit
www.altman.com/florida.htm to enter.
Second, Rick invites all UG Workshop attendees to come early and enjoy the CorelWORLD
99 Expo, to be held at the Doubletree from noon to 6 pm on October 6. The Expo will
feature third-party vendors with products and services for the graphics industry,
hourly prizes, and the conference's now-famous Help Center, where drop-in technical
support on publishing and graphics issues is always free. For Expo information, visit
www.altman.com/corelworld.htm.
"The UG Media Workshop and CorelWORLD are separate entities. The only request
Rick has made is that interested CorelWORLD patrons be allowed to attend the Workshop.
I was happy to agree to that; not only will many of them be UG members themselves,
but also I know that they can only add to the panel discussion that will make up
a major part of the Workshop program," Fermoyle notes, adding that the total
agenda "is still not carved in stone."
He plans to lead off with a presentation that will cover many publishing basics,
then have a volunteer group of experienced editors and webmasters join him for a
panel discussion. "We will encourage audience participation, in the UG spirit
of `users helping users.'"
Fermoyle's 50-year career as a writer, editor and journalist includes stints as editor
or staff member of four national magazines, including Popular Science. He has had
some 2,500 articles published in magazines ranging from Playboy to PC Laptop, Mechanix
Illustrated to MacWeek. He started his
syndicated column, sent free monthly to UG editors and webmasters, with 11 editors,
now has about 200 subscribers.
"I've enjoyed doing the column, giving back something to the User Group community
for the 17 years of learning, support and fun it has given me, and hope that this
Media Workshop will add to that effort." Fermoyle also reports that he might
organize similar events in other parts of the country "if this one goes
as we hope and we can work out the logistics for future UG Media Workshops."
