Gutenberg Bible on line*
I guess it isn't much use if, like me, you read no German, but it is interesting that the University of Texas at Austin has scanned its Gutenberg Bible and put thousands of those images on their web site. See it at: http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/
Webvan founder tries new approach to news
Louis Bordes, (co-founder of Borders Books and founder of Webvan grocery service), has launched a new venture called KeepMedia.com. It delivers articles from newspapers and magazines online at a monthly fee of $4.95 for subscription to the library (archives) of 140 publications. The current issue articles however will be sold on an individual basis for a fee of $1 to $3. This sounds pretty reasonable to me. (My company has a subscription to Factiva that costs considerably more.) http://www.keepmedia.com/
PKWare seeks patent for .zip format
.zip format files were originally created by PKWare and are the most popular compression routine for PC files. Since they were created though, a number of companies have produced software that uses that format for compression. Even Aladdin's Stuffit will produce files in that format. PKWare has had an issue lately that the format was splintering because of changes made by different companies. So they have filed for a copy write with the U.S. Patent Office. Guide to Supreme Court**
Back before the Internet, some people at Northwestern University created a Hypercard stack called "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the U.S. Supreme Court." Northwestern has updated it to be a web site and had done a tremendous job of bringing it up to date with current and historical information. Check itout at: http://www.oyez.org/oyez/frontpage
Interactive games on the Internet
The San Jose Mercury pointed out these web sites that can help with summertime boredom in the younger generation:

Hot Shot Business from Disney Online, a business simulation for 6-14 year olds
The Fin, Fur and Feather Bureau of Investigation from the WGBH Educational Foundation for 8-14 year olds.
This one get kids to do some summer reading. Reading Planet for Kids, America's largest non-profit children's literacy organization from Reading Is Fundamental at
www.rif.org/readingplanet. Here the kids get to write part of the story. Read the full descriptions at: http://www.bayarea.com/
Snapmail 4.0.3 for Mac OS 8-X
Glassbead sent me a heads up about the new update to their fantastic e-mail program. If you are running a Mac network, you should check out this program. One of my clients used it for at least 6 years before their business was purchased by a non-Mac friendly company. Glassbead even has an educational discount. Download the trial version at:
http://www.glassbead.com/download/
Tackyshirt ships first DVD
Also, Pamala Mielnicki of Tackyshirt sent me a message saying that their first DVD tutorial on OS X with Andy Ihnatko, Bob LeVitus, John Welch, and Shawn King has shipped. It contains four hours of 15 minute video clips telling you how to use OS X. More DVDs will be produced from material already recorded. The first DVD is $39.95. MacAcademy gets that and more for 2 hours of video on their CDs.
Don't know what their position is on MUG renting to members but it would seem to be a good way to help the beginning members. More details at:

'Mastering Kid Pix Deluxe 3' training
The E-learning Foundry today announced Mastering Kid Pix Deluxe 3, a new Web-based training. The course, which incorporates explanations, demonstrations, simulations, interactivity, testing, and exercises, is priced at US$25 and is available from the company's Web site at:
http://www.e-learningfoundry.com/
Everything you ever wanted to know about Chocolate.*
The only improvement I could see to this site would be to have an aroma button and perhaps one that would let you taste it via licking the screen. Lot of options for finding details. See it at:

Special Report on Apple
Business Week is running a special report on where Apple's change in strategy is taking it. Read the full report at:

Navy buys Linux on Apple kit
According to the Register, Apple has sold 260 Xserve servers to the US Navy for use on submarines. The catch here is that they will be running Yellow Dog Linux, not the Mac OS. But then it is a nice sale and certainly will be profitable to Apple. Full story at:

Your iPod is into leather
Booq has announced the introduction of its "PodPaq nappa" iPod case, a 3G iPod case crafted from pure Nappa leather -- for iPod users looking for a refined look. PodPaq includes slim belt clip, two accessory pockets in a removable flap, as well as precise cutouts for controls, headphone jack and dock. And, priced at $49.50, this well-rounded case may prove to be irresistible to many 3G iPod owners.

Portable Safari Bookmarks
Safari 1.0 makes easy to share your bookmarks across all the Macs you own, as well as with others. A new feature at .Mac uses iSync to keep your bookmarks synchronized on each Mac you use. And with .Mac Bookmarks, you can access your Safari bookmarks wherever you happen to be. Details as:

Toon Boom Too Expensive?
If you wanted a cool animation production program, but were turned off by the price of Toon Boom Studio check out Toon Boom's new product -- Toon Boom Studio Express. It costs less than its big brother, but allows you to generate lots of cool animations for the web, video, presentations, etc.
