- Apple drops MarketSource
- As far as I can determine this story that appeared on the AppleInsider web site, is true. I have asked a couple of friends of mine that were doing work at Fry's for MarketSource and Apple and they said that they were told not to expect any work from Apple this holiday season. So after at least 10 years, that relationship is dead. Of course, with Apple having their own people in the CompUSA stores and MicroCenter no longer selling Macs, there really was very little business going on any way. Full story at Appleinsider.com
- IBM Chips in Xbox
- PCWorld ran a story saying that an IBM PowerPC chip would power the next version of the Xbox. If true, this could help lower the price of the chips Apple gets for their machines. Of course, there are several version of the PowerPC chip and the Xbox is not necessarily using the same one. PCWorld
- Macromedia's site of the day!
- Chris Wronski of the MacUsers User Group, reported to the AUG mailing list that Macromedia picked his clubs site as their site of the day for November 7th. I checked it out on the 7th and it was on the MacroMedia web site. It does look interesting with a different use of Flash. Check out the groups site at: macusersonline.com
- Netiquette
- Thanks to Janice of MacRogues On-Line MUG and Lake County Mac User Group for pointing it out: Something we can all use as a reminder from time to time, is how to behave on line. Since we aren't in the same room as the person we are talking to, it can be very easy to say something that we might later regret.Isn't it time you got a little Netiquette?
- Apple Pushing media for 3G phones
- According to an article in the Straits Times on November 5th, Apple is trying to convince the phone companies that QuickTime is the perfect platform for doing multi-media on cell phones. Frank Casanova, Apple's director for QuickTime marketing was in Singapore trying to convince the members of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) just that. 3GPP is already using MPEG-4 as its standard and that was derived from QuickTime. Straits Times
- McDonald's to give away a BILLION iTunes.
- We thought Pepsi giving away a 100 million songs was a big deal. Now McDonalds is reportedly going to go for 10 times as many. Of course, not all the song "chips" given away will be claimed. But if anything can make iTunes Store profitable and a bigger hit, these two promotions should do it. See: biz.yahoo.com, and nypost.com
- Intel Redesigns the Transistor
- Intel said it has come up with a new insulating material for transistors to replace the silicon dioxide that has been used as the industry standard for about 30 years. This will enable smaller and more powerful chips. Full story at:Wired News
- iPod for Video?
- Forbes is running an article about a product developed by i-O Display Systems of Sacramento that is promising a January launce of a hand-held unit the size of a Palm computer that will hold up to 20 hours of TV shows, home movies and other video clips. Sounds like something that Apple fans have been asking for, for some time. Full story at: Forbes
- College Students To Get Free Access To Napster Service
- According to the Wall Street Journal on November 7th, Napster and the Pennsylvania State University has reached an agreement where all the 18,000 student who live in the campus residence halls will have free access to Napster's premium service. Of course this is for the "listening" service and not the downloading one. Still it is an interesting way for the University to cover themselves. Full story is available on the Wall Street Journal web site, but it is a pay site. So I don't go there.
[Fred comments] Of course if you've been to Napster looking for that low monthly rate for all the downloads you can stand, you probably noticed NO MACS ALLOWED. Mac users can't even get into the registration process. So, rumor has it the dorm pools for the account, and then hooks up the 600Gig networked hard drive for a continuous feed. Others they say have given up downloading tunes all together, opting rather for a continuous connection to popular digital radio stations with recorders converting everything to MP3s. read: Penn State, Napster Ink Pact
- MTV to compete with iTunes
- The music television network plans to enter the downloading arena in early 2004. The beefed-up service will compete with Apple's iTunes and other online song shops. This could move a substantial slice of the music market over to MTV simply because of the TV viewing market it controlls. This is going to be interesting!
- NoteBook on Mac OS X
- Circus Ponies has updated their popular NoteBook organizing, accessing, and notes sharing application. The new version downloads pictures, sounds and themes from the phone -- dragging Wap bookmarks from/to Safari and Export/import phonebook pictures in vCards . See: MacMedia
- Better Application Switching in Panther
- Mac users are rejoicing with Panther's way to switch from one open application to another -- typing Command-Tab. When you hold down the Command and type Tab, Panther presents you with a colorful dialog that displays icons for each of your open applications. Kind of helps take the sting off losing the Application Menu. See: Panther tips
- Apple promotes dot-Mac with Contribute
- Apple and Macromedia have cooked up an incentive for joining dot-Mac. For a limited time, you can purchase a .Mac membership with Contribute 2 for just $149. Supposedly, Contribute 2 provides all the tools you need to create and maintain your dot-Mac site, including thirteen ready-to-use web page designs. See: Apple's Contribute Promo
- Spam Wars: Filters Strike Back
- Until now, antispam developers and their products have played defense only. But now, one activist wants spam filters to automatically launch attacks against suspected spammers' sites to shut them down. By Amit Asaravala. (NOT a new idea!)
- Spam Revenge: Make Them Pay
- Of course if you wanted a brief feeling of revenge on all the spam you get, just take a spin on over to play "Bill A Spammer" ! This is not a new idea, many sites have launched similar "Spam Revenge" pages. But this group has done all the finger dancing for you and presents a dozen links where you can click and "Bill A Spammer" .. making them pay.Go ahead: Make Your Day
- Security Geeks Meet
- Anyone involved in securing Mac OS X or BSD systems or networks should plan to attend the Secure Trusted Operating System (STOS) Consortium in Washington, DC., December 1-5, 2003. Keynote speakers for premier security event for Mac OS X and BSD include Dr. Aviel Rubin, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Technical Director of the Information Security Institute at Johns Hopkins University -- and Doug Maughan of the Potomac Institute For Policy Studies. STOS Washington, DC., December 1-5
- Amazon: Look, But Don't Touch
- Remember last time we told you about Amazon's new "Search inside the book" feature. Well, now they've refined book-searching feature to prevent users from printing out sample pages. The Authors Guild squawked that readers might simply print material rather than buying a book. Of course, what will they do about "Saving the Source" or simply dragging and dropping the text to the desktop. See: HotWired.com
