The Rumor Manager
by Lynn Wegley

www.macosrumors is spreading some about MacOS X. For example:

  • The new imaging model in Ten Consumer, while it will ship under the name QuickDraw, is essentially a whole new technology. While it will support most of the existing QuickDraw and Display PostScript instructions as they exist in OpenStep and OS8, the core resembles neither technology very closely...
  • Multiple desktop support may be available through a mini-screenshot interface in the menubar, or an Application Dock-like icon list.
  • The "special" menu will probably be dropped in favor of moving those functions to other Finder menus and adding a Services menu, which will allow the user to access functions of many applications globally without having the applications launched (This will exist to a limited degree in Server).
  • Network resource finding will be moved out of dedicated applications like the Chooser and the Network Browser, and into the finder Dock -- a single icon will contain all networked devices in an interface that will be Finder-like, yet reminiscent of the Network Browser.
  • * As in Server and prior releases, application windows which contain unsaved changes will include a small dot in the center of the close box, suggesting that the user Save before clicking it.

Much more information is being released on a gradual basis. Keep your eyes peeled.
(BTW - Take anything that MacOSRumors says with a grain of salt. These guys are right a lot of the time, but sometimes they are really off base. lcw)

From www.macintouch.com : "Readers frequently ask us how to access "MIME" ("Base-64") information they receive in e-mail. Zachary Belado's freeware MIMEconvert and Harmony Software's shareware Decoder are two Mac utilities designed just for this purpose. (Should have them on DOM for April - lcw).

Other MIME resources include a MIME information page: < http://www.hunnysoft.com/mime/> from Douglas Sauder, a comp.mail.mime newsgroup on Usenet, and an Apple TIL article about encoding email enclosures < http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n57244>, plus several Qualcomm (Eudora)tech notes on the topic: MIME attachments, attachment encoding and "=" signs in mail." (Additional links available from Macintouch - lcw).

Remember if you are having a problem with file formats, you are not alone. Ask one of the other user group members. Someone in the group has undoubtedly gone through the same problem in the past.

Macintouch has also reported on a new virus. The 666 Virus. Laffey Computer Imaging www.laffeycomputer.com/software.html has posted Exorcist, an inoculation utility. By the time you read this, all the major engines will have been updated. Be sure to keep yours up to date.

Also from Macintouch: Limit Point's iForm is billed as an "elegant but affordable little forms processor" on the Web for smaller organizations. It is priced at $77 through March 30 ($87 thereafter).

Also if you want a free word processor, check out www.nisus.com. They have a new "lite" version of their word processor they are giving away. The upgrade to their full featured one is a good buy and should be considered if you are doing anything beyond writing letters to mom.

3Com purchased Claris Organizer from Apple

As you may know. 3Com purchased Claris Organizer from Apple. They just released Mac Pac 2.0, which is Organizer specifically written to sync files between the Palm machines and the Mac. The beauty of this is, Mac Pac 2.0 is a free download. Just get it from 3Com's web site. Even if you don't have a Palm, you can use it for your contacts and calendar. Of course they are hoping it will be come obvious how beneficial buying their product is. The catch on the Mac Pac is, you can't get any support without a Palm serial number. But it is still a great deal.

Apple just released a new version of ColorSync.
So if that is a tool you use, you should download it from www.apple.com or via www.versiontracker.com. Version Tracker is a great way to keep up with the revisions for all your software.

Apple's new product Final Cut should be announced at the National Broadcasters show in April, but probably nothing else, except maybe QuickTime 4.0. I expect to see good things out of the Developers conference in May, but not much of news before then. But I am sure the Internet will keep the rumors flying. pau
