- New Internet "Network"
- On September 9, Digital Island Inc. announced plans to build a worldwide network
streaming video and audio with RealNetworks Inc. and Inktomi Corp. Digital Island
said it will integrate RealNetworks' software for media delivery and Inktomi's software
for audio and video caching. Digital Island's network connects data centers and local
Internet service providers. Sounds like real competition for QTTV. I wonder how Gates
is doing with his streaming technology.

- ScanTastic
- ScanTastic version V4 brings Mac support to HP and Epson USB scanners
Second Glance Software's ScanTastic Version 4 brings Macintosh support to HP's new
3300C amd 6300C scanners. ScanTastic works with a wide range of USB scanners including
many HP and Epson scanners. It's $69 with a demo version available. More.

- Be Careful Out There
- The San Jose Mercury News via an AP story is talking about a Swedish teenager
who put links on his web site to other sites. He got sued and charged with piracy.
The verdict was to be announced on September 15. So becareful what you link to.

- US Army
- I have seen several Mac web site posting that tell of the US Army switching to
Mac servers because they are much more secure. (After having someone successfully
attack its NT server). Here is the actual Army posting.
****
- FreeBSD
- A Wall Street Journal article talks about FreeBSD being used by many Internet
firms, including Yahoo, but the real surprise is: "The free programs are all
variants of the venerable Unix system invented by AT&T Corp. And they aren't
just running Yahoo. While Microsoft almost never talks about it, its own Hotmail
free e-mail service runs not on its flagship Windows NT but on FreeBSD." More
is available on this story!

- Palm
- Well, apparently 3Com has decided to concentrate on Networking issues and has
decided to spin off Palm. For more info Http://www.3com.com/news/releases/pr99/sep1399a.html Wonder if
this will help or hinder the "Apple Palm".

- Messenger for Macs
- Mac users finally get to enter the instant messager war, Microsoft Corp. iannounced
on September 15th that it is offering free downloads of its MSN Messenger Service,
which allows users to "chat" with others online, for the Macintosh platform,
and also plans to release software versions for Windows CE, WebTV and MSN Mobile
Service. For more info and to download the software go to: http://messenger.msn.com.

- Dell
- Dell is going to be producing notebooks computers using the same IEEE 802.11
technology as Apple's AirPort. Dell will to use a PC card from AiroNet for about
$400. AiroNet has not set a price on their base station yet. Apple has announced
pricing of its AirPort expansion card for $99 and its base station for $299. Apple's
iBook and Power Mac G4s feature built-in antennas, perhaps that is the additional
expense on the Dell computers.

- SuperCard
- IncWell DMG, Ltd. announced on September 16, that the SuperCard upgrade path
for owners of SuperCard 2.5 or older will end on October 15, 1999. The upgrade path
for SuperCard 3+ and HyperCard owners remains at $99.95. Since June 1998, IncWell
has released two major upgrades and a new web plug in for Windows 95/98 and NT, keeping
it up to date.
