- 9911.12 Rumor Manager - Compaq High End, Intel 800 Mill, ShareWay/DoorStop
****
- ShareWay/DoorStop
- Computer Reseller Newsreported, that- Open Door Networks Inc., the developer
of Apple Computer Inc.'s Mac OS 9's Internet file-sharing feature, released ShareWay
IP 3.0, an Internet file-sharing program, and DoorStop Personal Edition firewall
software. ShareWay pricing ranges from $39 for the personal edition to $1,799 for
50-user licenses. DoorStop, which is expected to ship this month, will cost from
$59 for a single license to $1,299 for 50 licenses. If you have one of the cable
modems or an ADSL connection, you need to look into getting a firewall program for
your computer.

- Compaq's high end machine
- For the first time, Compaq is offering a high end machine with an AMD chip instead
of an Intel one. The new machine, the Presario 5868 uses a 600 MHz Athlon processor.
It is priced at $17,000. Comes with 128 MB of SDRAM and a 17 Gig hard drive. While
its graphic card may be better than an iMac DV SE, I see no real difference and do
not understand why the Voodoo card alone would make it worth 12 times the price.
Perhaps the price in the press release was wrong and it should be $1,700. Then again
the article was from the South China Morning News. So it might be listed in Hong
Kong dollars. (BTW - it also comes with a 15 inch monitor.)

- Intel to Spend $800 Mill on "Intel Inside Message"
- Advertising Age is reporting, that Intel has established an $800 Million budget
for advertising its "Intel Inside Message". It actually will control much
more advertising than that since it is for co-payments made to other manufacturers
that include that logo in their advertisements. Wonder when the AIM group will advertise
PowerPC inside. But since Motorola doesn't even use PowerPC chips in their corporate
computers, I guess it probably never will make such a ad.

- Alumni News looking for YOU
- Someone has put together a listing of what appears to be every High School in
America. You go to your city , pick your school and year then add your name and contact
point. You can now contact anyone from your class who has already registered. It
looks pretty through, although I was only the 4th person in from my class in Henryetta,
OK high school that registered. So let's help them get more people registered. http://www.highschoolalumni.com/ I know
there is a least one other site doing this also, but I don't have their URL at the
moment.

- Slow week,
- ... what with all the excitement of the Microsoft "Finding of Fact"
announcement, no one seems to be making many announcements. www.macrumors.com
had some news about Apple purchasing a lot of screens including one small enough
to go into a hand held device. So that is one rumor we can spread, even if I haven't
verified it.

- What are you missing? Are you missing the list?
- Speaking of slow week.... not so with the UGNN discussion lists. There has been
a lot of talk concerning the Microsoft "Finding of Fact" results, and other
issues. REMEMBER: what I put in this column is NOT necessarily what's discussed or
posted to both Rumors and TALK. Subscribe
and get involved!
