MacLaunch; Pentium Glitch; Time Capsule; Symantec; Apple Japan
****
- MacLaunch
- Billing itself as the Mac Portal, MacLaunch has launched and looks pretty good.
Plenty of links and what appears to be a decent search engine. To celebrate its launch,
MacLaunch is giving away $15,000 worth of prizes to registered MacLaunch users. Check
it out at:

[EDITOR'S NOTE: MacLaunch seems to be a huge spam site... beware:
we have been spammed and spammed by them. Joining under a unique new AOL address
brought spam within 12 hours. If you plan on using any of their free services use
ficticious information unless you want your personal data shared with advertisers.]
****
- Pentium Glitch
- ZDNet's AnchorDesk reported on December 2, that the new Pentium III chips using
the copper technology called "CopperMine" would require the user to push
twice on the power button before they would boot up. This is true of the chips shipped
since October 25. For some reason the article picks on Dell as being forced to stop
shipping its corporate desktop model.
****
- Time Capsule
- While they didn't say what model it was, a Macintosh was buried in a time capsule
on December 2nd at SMU in Dallas. The goal is to have the capsule opened in 3000.
Besides the Mac other common items were Levis, Barbies, Beanie Babies, Diet Coke,
DVDs of Saving Private Ryan and Apocalypse Now. Also making the trip into the future
is Doctor Ruth's Sex for Dummies. Wonder what future generations will make of that.
****
- Symantec Slammed with Fine
- On December 6, a federal court found Symantec Corp in civil contempt and ordered
it to pay $544.581 in its copyright litigation with Network Associates. The law suit
involves Network Associates assertion that Symantec used code from CyberMedia Uninstaller
in it's Norton Uninstall Deluxe product. The court had ruled that Symantec must stop
selling product. However Best Buy continued to sell the product after the court order,
thus the fine. Personally, I am glad I never have to use uninstallers.
****
- Apple doesn't trade fare?
- Japan's Fair Trade Commission raided the Tokyo offices of Apple Japan on Tuesday
Moring, 12/7/99. Reported the raid was in response to Apple's pressure on dealers
not to sell iMacs and iBooks below the suggested retail price. According to the Japanese
law, that would be price fixing. Sounds like the Japanese could be getting lower
prices real soon now.
