notes below
- 2K02.04: University of Hypercard; About.com; NEC; DoubleClick; Gil Amelio
****
- Mac: University of Hypercard
- Everything you ever wanted to know about learning HyperCard. Yes, I know that
Apple hasn't promoted it recently and it isn't even easy to find. But it is still
an outstanding program to get your work done in the manner you see fit. Bill Atkinson
really prove his genius with this program. Check it out!
****
- Mac: About.com
- About.com is running a series of articles about the Macintosh Advantage over
Windows 85/98. The archives contain the first seven articles. The eighth (AppleScript), the current
one is
also available. William Bailey really seems to know what does make it better.
I have been telling people for sometime, that you really can't point to a single
major benefit, but thousands of little things that take things one step (or more)
further than the Windows experience. Mr. Bailey expresses this belief in much more
detail than I ever could.
[ Editor's Note: Beware that About.com is a heavy SPAM site. You'll
be better served to arrive there with graphics turned off. ]

- Cross Platform: NEC
- The Register reported that NEC unveiled an IEEE 1394 'Firewireless' home LAN,
that is designed to connect home computers to entertainment devices and other appliances.
Last Year, Canon had a prototype of a device that would work at 100 Mbps, but they
didn't plan on producing a product. NEC's version will support the full data rate
of 400Mbps at distances of up to 12 meters with a direct line of sight and 7 meters
through walls. (Note: Sony calls there 1394 product iLink and Apple calls theirs
Firewire.) With the IEEE standard soon doubling the speed, Firewire should be a really
terrific way to network a home.

- Internet: DoubleClick
- I admit I missed the original story, but the Mercury News was kind enough to
quote the USAToday story in its Technology Column. DoubleClick is reconsidering its
promise not to connect individual browsers with names and address for further marketing
opportunities. Apparently they have been doing this for a year, since buying a direct
marketing company called Abacus Direct Corp. It is possible to opt out of this by
using your browser to go to its web site. Of course if you use more than one browser
on your computer. (I have two and sometimes three on my Mac + my work PC). To opt
out, go to www.doubleclick.net and click on Privacy Policy, then click on the Privacy
& Opt Out link. Now if we can only trust them not to change their mind again.
(and you will have to do it for each browser and possibly each time you install a
new version).
Another place to go for opting out of other marketing plans is <http://opt-out.cdt.org>

- iMac upgrades
- Insanely Great Mac newsletter is saying that Newer Technologies has th iMAXpowr
G3 466 MHz upgrade. It comes with a 133 MHz 1 meg cache. It works with the Original
iMac through Rev D. And the really good news is that it doesn't require any additional
system extensions to work with any of the OS versions that will work on the original
iMac. So, you too can have a super fast iMac. (BTW - in addition to the regular catalog
outlets, Newer will soon have their own internet store for direct sales. See them
at: <http://www.NewerStore.com>

- Humor: Gil Amelio
- Globe and Mail (I think it is a Canadian paper) is quoting this joke from Gil
Amelio. Al Gore, Bill Clinton and Steve Jobs, Apple's current CEO, arrived at the
pearly gates. To gain entrance to heaven, God -- sitting upon a throne -- asked the
trio what they believed in. Mr. Gore said he believed in the importance of preserving
the environment. Mr. Clinton said he believed in the importance of being sympathetic.
Mr. Jobs, a perfectionist widely credited with reviving Apple, said "God, I
believe you are sitting in my chair."

- Quote of the Week:
- "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." --Thomas
Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943
****
- Web site of the Week:
- Last week I recommend a web site that gives you access to over 400 items of regional
fare, that we grew up with. This week I a posting a site that presents you with links
to specialty food web sites that will sell you regional food such as Eli's Cheesecake
from Chicago and those great Sabrett hot dogs from New York City. I even found Italian
sausage from the Lovera's Family Grocery in Krebs, Oklahoma. (Some of the best Italian
family restaurants in the world are in Krebs (Oklahoma's Little Italy). So, check
out http://www.homesickgourmet.com/
