notes below
- 2K02.11: Be; Apple Linux; Palm; AppleCare Service Certification; iMac upgrades;
****
- Be
- Be has announced that its operating system will now be targeted at Internet appliances.
They are currently giving it away to Intel and older Mac systems. See their web site
for more details (www.be.com)
****
- Apple launches Linux on PowerPC website
- Insanely Great Mac reported on 2/5/2000 that Apple Computer quietly put up a
website dedicated to PowerPC
Linux on its servers. While it is currently limited to a single webpage that contains
basic information about Linux, links to PowerPC Linux distributions and utilities.
As IGM points out it is an interesting development since Apple has refused to support
BeOS on its current G3 & G4 processors.
****
- Palm
- Palm reduced its prices last week. The new prices are as follows (old prices
are indicated in parenthesis): Palm IIIe - $149 ($179); Palm IIIx - $229 ($299);
Palm V - $329 ($399); Palm Vx - $449 ($499). (Another item from Insanely Great Mac)
****
- AppleCare Service Certification
- You can now get an AppleCare Technician Training package from Apple's online
store. It comes on CD-ROM and once completed, you can go to any Sylvan Prometric
testing center to complete the certification. The CD is $299, the testing charges
are extra. I personally feel that this is WAY over due. Apple needs some certified
"shade tree mechanics". It is so much easier to find people to work on
non-Apple computers. The only catch here is that it still doesn't give one access
to parts. Maybe that will come eventually.
****
- iMac
- When the iMac was introduced everyone said that it was only upgradeable in terms
of RAM and USB devices. Now come Newer Technologies to perform some of their magic
to give us the ability to upgrade iMac versions through "D" to a 466MHz
G3 microprocessor with 1MB of backside cache running on one 155MHz cache bus. They
are only asking $699 for the card, and will rebate $200 when you send in your old
processor card. (This keeps them supplied with Apple ROMs). 466 MHz is nearly 15%
faster than the current iMacs that Apple is selling. To find out more, visit Newer's
website.
- Quote of the Week:
- "I have traveled the length and breadth of this country and talked with
the best people, and I can assure you that data processing is a fad that won't last
out the year." --The editor in charge of business books for Prentice Hall, 1957

- Web site of the Week:
- Hey Kids What Time Is It?
As any good boomer knows, it is Howdy Doody Time! NBC and King Features have agreed
to let StudioFX put up a web site honoring Howdy Doody. It really brings back memories.
But what is surprising is some of the Peanut Gallery alumni (and how hard it was
to get into the gallery). Signourney Weaver, John Ritter and Joe Namath were there
to name three. It is best viewed with Quicktime 4 and Flash 4, but check it out.
