- InDesign
- Adobe announced an update to InDesign bringing it up to version 1.5. The update
adds 70 new features. It is even better integrated with other Adobe applications
and has enhanced precision and control. It is suppose to be available next month.
Gee, and is hasn't even been out a year yet. ($99 upgrade price)
[Editors Note: upgrades is where the gravey is for software companies.
Particularly those who sell the upgrades online, or send out a simple CD. Chances
are the features were coded into the initial release, and only 'revealed' in the
upgrade. Each new product added to the product line offers the promis of a long upgrade
life. Both Photoshop and Illustrator have been exploited about as far as they can.
InDesign holds new and fertile upgrade revenue for Adobe.]

- Game Developers Conference
- At last week's Game Developers Conference, Microsoft announced its plans to go
head to head with Sony's PlayStation 2 using its X-Box. Apple meanwhile showed off
how beneficial OSX with OpenGL and Airport to making a better game experience. Sounds
like gamers are approaching heaven.
****
- MacAddict
- MacAddict reports that its advertisements for the January 2000 issue is up 16.3%
while getting 39.5% greater revenue when compared to the January 1999 issue. It was
one of only 3 consumer magazines to report an increase. There is no question that
MacAddict has won over many Mac users and in general has replaced the old Mac User
magazine as the alternative to MacWorld. It in my mind even better than its PC sister
publication Boot! It was willing to address the common user instead of only those
able to purchase the latest and greatest hardware and software. If you are a Mac
User and don't subscribe you are missing a great resource.
****
- MacOS9
- MacCentral is reporting that there is a problem with OS9 that it doesn't delete
temporary files. (More info: http://www.maccentral.com/news/0003/14.disk.shtml) Thus causing
a hard drive to fill up. There will be a fix in the next major OS update, but meanwhile
Apple has an AppleScript that will delete the files. See TIL note: at http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n25134
****
- Spam
- A Washington State judge threw out a lawsuit against a spammer. He said the state's
anti-spam law is unconstitutional. So that might mean MORE spam in our mailboxes.
****
- Real Networks
- Real Networks had licensed Windows Media from Microsoft. Sounds like the only
alternative now is QuickTime. Microsoft is once again gaining a commanding lead in
an Internet technology.
****
- ACI & Star Nine Technologies
- On March 15 ACI, the publisher of 4th Dimension announced it was acquiring Star
Nine. Star Nine is the produce of WebStar one of the more successful web server products
for the Mac. ACI will continue to develop WebStar and integrate 4D more with the
Internet.

- Simple pleasures for lovers of Shaker
The Atlanta Constitution pointed this one out to me. I can't afford to many of their
products, but they are nice with a lot of craftsmanship. "These sturdy reproduction
wood pieces based on the work of the New York and New England religious sect have
straight, simple lines and are available in several finishes. You can order them
assembled or in a do-it-yourself kit with all the parts and instructions." Visit
www.shakerworkshops.com.
BTW - If anyone know where I can find the web site for Sherman On the Mount, the
'80s strip about a positive thinking friar. Please let me know.
