Info Manager - 5/19/Y2K Mac OS X; WebObjects; iMovie; BeOS; QuickTime No-Show
****
OS X
First news out of Apple's World Wide Developer's Conference is that OS X will not be available to the consumers until January 2001. Seems like Steve decided they should do more testing first. So we will now have a public beta. We will all get the opportunity to let Steve know what is wrong with it. Or at least those of you with G3 Macs or newer.
****
WebObjects
Apple also at thw WWDC announced a slash in the license price of its WebObjects application to only $699 instead of the $50,000 they had been charging. This should upset those 3,000 large corporate customers that have been using it. However this should more than increase the customer base by the factor of 10-100 that Jobs is expecting. The current version of WebObjects, runs Apple's OS X, Microsoft's Windows 2000, Sun.'s and HP's HP-UX. Coming soon, a new version for Sun's Solaris system.
****
iMovie
Apple also announced last week, that iMovie has now been downloaded more than 150,000 times. Isn't it amazing how many pieces of software you can give away? Now how many really BAD movies will be made because of this give away? It is still available at Apple's web site if you are interested.

BeOS
InfoWorld is reporting that BeOS 5.0 has now reached 1 million downloads. Be, which started as an alternative to the Mac OS on PowerPC machines, is now exclusively on Intel and Intel clone machines. For more info:

QuickTime 5
Another preview from Apple Monday at the WWDC conference of next version of QuickTime. They started out talking about the success of the QuickTime 4 software. It noted that over 50 million copies of QuickTime have been distributed to Mac and Windows computers. Another indicator of success is that most on-line viewers choose to watch their movie trailers in QuickTime and mostly from the Apple.com web site. One example given was the 12 million views of New Line Cinema's "The Lord of the Rings" preview topped since its April 7 debut, making it one of the largest online entertainment events ever. (I viewed it myself and am looking forward to the first of the trilogy next year.)
__ Then Apple gave a preview of its upcoming version of QuickTIme which is planned for release this summer. The biggest new features are support for MPEG-1 (important for MP3 playback) and MPEG-2 (for DVD), Flash 4 for web animation, and an enhanced QuickTime VR playback. There is more, but even with this it looks like a must have upgrade.

QuickTime No-Go for NewMedia 2000
Last year's NewMedia Expo in Toronto saw iMacs and QuickTime everywhere... QuickTime Key Note, Streaming at every booth, Final Cut Pro all over the place -- Apple being a major presence at the premier multi-media expo. So where was Apple this year??? Nowhere to be found. One Apple reseller had iMac bags, and that's it. Rumor on the show floor was "Jobs sez Apple's no longer interested in doing shows." Hmmmmmm... wonder if they'll be at Macworld NY this year?

Web site of the Week:
MacProNews provided me with a couple of web sites for this week. An AppleWorks web site mentioned is http://www.tandb.com.au/appleworks/. This provides a good resource for AppleWorks. The second one is BargainTracker. This is a Mac specific site for getting bargains on Mac software and hardware. For example: A wireless video camera for $79.99.and Nortons Uilities 4.0 $9.00 and Civilization II for $11.90. (That was cheap enough for me to replace the lost CD of Civ II that I enjoy so much.)
