Multi-Processor iMacs?
I just read an article predicting that a multi-processor iMac would be introduced in NYC at Expo. Ain't going to happen. At least, not with multiple G3s. The G3 (based on the 603)can't be used for a multiprocessor machine. Now if Apple has the G4 available and cheap enough, then that MIGHT happen. Although I doubt it. Look for a new iMac with a new mouse and a new keyboard. MAYBE with a bigger screen, although that to is highly unlikely. As Expo gets closer, the rumors get wilder. BTW - Harry Potter will NOT appear in NYC. However the January show is a possibility. ;-)

MacWorld Event List
The Hess Memorial Event List is once again available at: http://www.xensei.com/users/ileneh/partylist.html. Ilene Hoffman has taken over the list originally created by Robert Hess. If you are going to Expo, you need to check it out. Just be sure to follow the directions on the list. Otherwise you won't make it to many events.

Micrografx
Micrografx, a Texas based developer of business graphics software. Announce on 7/3 that it was laying off 74 of its 187 employees. Even with the layoffs, they have stated that they will need additional capital investments in order to survive. They are also dividing up into two business units to make the products easier to manage. Its enterprise process management business will be based in Portland, Oregon while the technical graphics unit will leave Allen, Texas for Annapolis, Maryland. It seems that Adobe is about the only one doing well in the graphics market. Hopefully Micrografx and Corel will get their act together and pull it out.

AOL
In an article titled "AOL 5.0 for the Mac: No High Fives" <http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/july2000/nf00705c.htm>, Business Week talks about the new features in 5.0. The good, the bad and the ugly.
__ The complaint is that AOL's strong suit has never been cutting edge software, but in making things simple for the newbie. This software does neither.
One of the things they praise is the ability to drag and drop files to be used as attachments in e-mail messages. Others are the Download Manager that simplifies locating files and of course the ability to have SEVEN screen names.
__ Then there is the bad news. My Places, allows the addition of five favorite links to the AOL's Welcome screen as long as those five items are within AOL and not on the web. Another complaint is the My Calendar feature. According to the article it took 5 steps to add a new event. For the full article see the link above.
__ (The Info Manager, is a charter subscriber to AOL and while using 5.0 hasn't used any of the new features. If you are a member, you should read the article).

Sony
ZDnet is reporting that starting in September Sony will be licensing a new compact disc format that will double the storage capacity of CDs. The format will be able to prevent ilegal copying. (That is interesting). And will have a 1.3 GB capacity in all three formats (CD/CD-R and CD-RW. More: http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/news/0,4586,2598043,00.html

Quote of the Week:
"Forever" Jeff Bezos in response to a woman at PC Expo who asked how long Amazon.com planned to keep her purchase history data. (Quote from Information Week).
"The first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to
unlearn." Gloria Steinem

Web site of the Week:
I have often recommended VersionTracker.com for Mac people to keep track of the latest version of their software. I just discovered there is another site that does the same type of thing for both Mac and PC. So you might want to check it out at: http://www.softwatcher.com/pc/ or http://www.softwatcher.com/mac/
(Note: VersionTracker still does a better job for the Mac.)
