- Info Manager - 10/27/Y2K
- What is it? Mac IE 5.0 Scrapbook; the Woz; Amiga; SkyCorp; Windows "Fix"
.
- What is it?
- Could it be the 21st Century Newton? Could it be the legendary "Knowledge
Navigator"? If you know let us know! It arrived on our desk in today's mail
adorning the front cover of the 2000 Microsoft annual report. At first skimming,
there seems to be no mention of it inside, either.
.
- RightOnMac
- About.com's RightOnMac section has a really good article on using the Scrapbook
feature in Internet Explorer. This is a Mac only feature and helps to show that the
guys in the Microsoft Mac division really do understand the Mac. To read about this
useful feature go to: http://rightonmac.com/articles/00/10/20-scrapbook.html
.
- Internet Phone
- I have briefly talked in the past about Internet Phone services. Here is a company
that sells such products including a device that will let your telephone connect
directly to the Internet for the purpose of calling any other phone in the world
at local rates. For more on this go to: http://www.ctdepot.com/store/telephony_service/telephony_service.htm
PC to phone
.
- The Woz
- Steve Wozniak recently appeared at a Mac convention. That prompted Mac Central
to do an article about the appearance at: http://www.maccentral.com/news/0010/23.keynote.shtml.
He even admitted to some of his rebelliousness in his school days. Today of course,
he teaches school and is enjoying life without the pressures he would have if he
had stayed at Apple. One of the people responding to the article says: "Nitrozac
and I had the extreme pleasure of teaching his class this year... it was an amazing
and inspirational experience. Woz stands out as one of the nicest, warmest, and most
generous people we've ever met. ... If you're interested, here's a page on our Woz
visit... http://www.geekculture.com/geekycomics/Aftery2k/fanclub/woz/index.html "
.
- RightOnMac
- At this web site, there is an article called "Get a Compaq and put the old
Mac to rest - revisited" which should be read by anyone tempted to part with
their old Mac and go to the dark side. This is a follow- article to one that had
started: "I've been pricing out a new machine for home. A 550 MHz Compaq with
a 40 GB drive, CD-RW drive, and DVD-ROM drive is going for $600 at auction. Now we
just need to find a place for the old Mac to rest." Of course things don't work
as well as he expects. To read the article go to: http://www.rightonmac.com/articles/00/10/23-compaq.html
.
- Amiga
- Yep, a new Amiga has been announced. Bill McEwen announced plans for a new computer
soon after he bought the rights to Amiga from Gateway. The AmigaOne's specs sound
like an iMac. USB, firewire, Ethernet ports, 56K modem, DVD drive. Quality audio
card and NO floppy dirve. What is surprising is that they are not yet saying what
processor it will use. The full story is at: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/2/14164.html
.
- SkyCorp
- Earlier in the year, I mentioned that a company was planning on putting a G4
into orbit. Well, accoring to MacWeek, SkyCorp will be the one to do. Sometime next
year, they are going to put a satellite on board a space shuttle for launching. Once
in orbit, the shuttle will merely push it out a door. This web server will be accessible
from text-enabled cellphones and other wireless items. More at: http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewnews.html?id=233
.
- Microsoft Windows Fix
- Newsday is reporting that Microsoft has developed a new control panel that will
solve many problems in Windows 95 & 2000. For example, its repair options can
force Windows to redraw all the icons on your screen when it starts scrambling its
icons, and you can repair the "Temporary Internet Files" or fonts folders
when they start acting like normal folders. This "fix" is available at:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp
.
- Quote of the Week:
- "This won't blow Microsoft Office off the desktop, but there is room for
alternative [productivity suites] in some places." --Tracy Corbo, an analyst
at Hurwitz Group, in Framingham, Mass., speaking about StarOffice. (Which is now
open sourced. Thanks InfoWorld for the quote.)

There publications can also be purchased in pdf format at: http://www1.mightywords.com/collections/zdnet/
Bonus Site:
The Library of Congress has a great section on Bob Hope. See it at: http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/bobhope
