Info Manager - 11/24/Y2K
Apple Store; Copernic; LCIII; Pentium 4; iVisit

Apple Store
The San Jose Mercury News reported on November 16th that Apple has leased land in Palo Alto for the purpose of opening a company owned store. They are reporting that Apple is following in the footsteps of Gateway and that this store is the prototype for further stores to be opened around the country. The rumor about Apple Stores has been around for a couple of years now, it looks like it might actually happen now. More at: http://www0.mercurycenter.com/svtech/news/indepth/docs/apple111700.htm
.
Copernic
I have talked about Copernic in the past. It has been updated to Copernic 2000 for Windows machines, but development for the Mac version was stopped on Copernic 1999. David Egger of MacMonkey is organizing an effort to get the development continued on the Mac. Copernic is an Internet search tool very similar to Sherlock in the MacOS, but some feel it does the searching much better. I couldn't find it on this trip, but previously there was even a version for 68K machines. For more info on this campaign go to: http://www.macmonkey.com/news.php?task=view&articleID=21
.
LCIIIs
I know you are asking what is new about Mac LCIIIs. Well, there is an interesting article on using LCIIIs purchased via eBay to help special students. Check it out at: http://www.mathdittos2.com/columns/view/v001120.html You would think more MUGs would get involved in topics like this.
.
Pentium 4
Going from an old computer to the newest processor. IDG has a good review of the Pentium 4 at: http://www.idg.net/go.cgi?id=369097. One of the things they are stating is that the Pentium 4 at 1.5 GHz is actually slower in some tasks than the 1 GHz Pentium 3. I guess that what Apple has been saying all along is true. Processor speed doesn't matter it is what it does while it is going through its cycles. Oh, well, the Pentium 4 will undoubtedly be a big hit in the market. 1.5 does sound like it is 50% faster than 1.0.

iVisit
Want video conference software that works cross platform? I haven't tried it, but the folks at iVisit seem to be giving away their software. I don't understand how they are paying their bills. See it at: http://www.ivisit.com/index.htm
.
Web Site of the Week:
Use your Mac in a Windows office? Or have both platforms at home and want to connect them? This web site tells you how to do all that and more. See: http://www.macwindows.com/
