- Apple Announcements
- Of course the big news this past week was the speed bumped PowerMac G4 Towers. Now up to a Duo-1 Gigahertz machine. But also the G4 iMac made news of its own as the fastest selling Mac in history with 150,000 preordered in only three weeks. This compares with 100,000 for the first iMac in a two month period. Really impressive. But then who wouldn't want one of those lamps on their desk.
* Inside the new iMac __ If you want to deal with what is inside the iMac, here are some details: http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/iMac/index.html .
- LA Final Cut Pro user group heading to New York
- Dennis Sellers in a MacCentral article tells about activities at this year's New York DV Show, where the LAFCPUG is going to hold a meeting on February 12th at the New Yorker Hotel. They have a lot of big plans. If you are a Final Cut Pro User you should plan on being at the show and attending the LAFCPUG meeting.

- Timbuktu recovers stolen iMac.
- This story was pointed out to me on the Apple Corp BBS. Somehow I had missed it. But MacCentral ran a story on how a person using AppleScript, Timbuktu and Caller-ID was able to track down his stolen iMac and get it back.

- Vintage software
- Got an older Mac and want some software to run on it. (Great way to introduce the kids to Macs.) Check out these two web sites for the software: http://www.livingbooks.com/ and

- Mac Songs
- Wired magazine is running a story about John Swerdan's who has written music about Macs. He has recorded an entire album of songs inspired by his precious Mac. The nine songs about Macs written and recorded over a period of three years include "Startup/Hard Drive," "Quickdraw Bill" and "Poor Sad Mac."

- MSN MapPoint
- There is now a competitor to MacQuest. In a big way. Internet News reported on January 24th that Microsoft has a new mapping program to counter AOL's MapQuest. I always thought that MapQuest was owned by Yahoo!, but apparently they just have an agreement with AOL to use it. Since MacPoint.msn.com is a web page, it should be usable by Macs. But that isn't always the case. I will have to check it out from home. IN also suggested that this was one of the first apps in the .NET service that MS is planning on offering. The more things go on, the more interesting they get.

- Mac Satellite
- Dennis Sellers on MacCentral reported that Hughes' DirecWay is now available to Macs via a new add-on Ethernet box, that becomes a third piece of the current two-piece adapter kit. It's due out by late spring, and should cost US$200 to $300 more than the current hardware package The current kit uses USB and apparently doesn't work well even on a PC.

- VOM - MYOB, Inc.
- Todd Salkovitz is the designated MYOB's MUG evangelist. He comes to the position honestly as the President of MacBUS in Philadelphia. (Web site at: www.macbus.org - BTW it has a perfect example of how to promote and recognize vendors who are and have appeared at their meetings.)
__ I have worked with Craig Runeberg, their local representative in Dallas area a number of times. He has always put on a good show. Along with that comes handouts, trial versions on CD, Spec sheets and User Group special pricing. They will also put your user group in their calendar on their web site. __ There is an Acrobat form to fill out for a presentation on the site.
