Mac OS X Only Booting in 2003
New Macs sold in 2003 will boot only into OS X even though the Classic environment will be available. (Apple Expo, Paris announcement).
Full story at:

.
iCal
Apple also announced that iCal is now shipping. This is one of the "biggerä announcements in Paris. Apparently new hardware is not yet coming.

Mac-on-Linux now runs Jaguar
Ron Carlson is reporting that Ibrium now has shown MacOS X 10.2 running on Mac-on-Linux (MOL). Sounds kind of twisted to me, but interesting. A link to download MOL is in the story at:

.
Coffee Break Arcade*
This is a cool web site for wasting time. The games are in Java, Shockwave and Flash format, so they should all work on the Mac if you have those plug-ins installed in your browser.
Check it out at:
http://www.coffeebreakarcade.com/

.
License Plate production*
This web site is another way to kill time. You can create a license plate that looks just like all those one in your home state. I created on using Texas Wildlife plate that includes the letters INFOMNGR. Pretty cool.
See it at:

.
Apple Announce printer deals
No, Apple didn't announce Apple branded printers. Don't expect that to happen again. But they did announce that Xerox and Canon had joined HP, Epson and Lexmark in supporting the Rendevous protocol. These printers will be found automatically by the Mac when they are attached to the network. (No Link)

.
BLOG via iCal
With iCal, you can subscribe to BLOGs and get updated automatically. See how to set it up on you web site at O'Reilly:

Database of British History Resources**
My wife has been asking about history lately. Seems she didn't cover it very well in school. The Research Buzz newsletter turned me on to a web site dedicated to British history. I has a searchable directory of over 25K venues, organizations and experts in the UK as well as a browsable timeline from 10,000 BC to now. See it at:

Scary
I believe I have mentioned in the past, that some retailers are starting to put chips into packaging. The Radio Frequency IDs, (RFID) work on the same principle as toll passes or the Mobil Oil Speed Pass. They broadcast and number and a receiver records it. This will greatly simplify inventory and reordering and possibly even check out.
However, I just read a story in an e-mail from Ephraim Schwartz (ephraim_schwartz@infoworld.com) of InfoWorld about something that Saudia Arabia is doing. Because of the influx of pilgrims each year to Mecca, they have a real crowd control and security problem. So they are adding to the passports an RFID that will let the police and security people know who is in the crowd. Even tells them what language is spoken by the bearer.
This is scary enough, but Ephraim speculates that it would be possible to embed these devices below the skin in a human, perhaps even at birth. Just think of the possibilities. I don't know if the story is on line since it is part of an e-mail distribution, but you can look for it on InfoWorld.

Not as scary?
In an article by ComputerWire, (repeated on the Register), there is a story about how there is now an Open Source version of .NET that supports some of the Open Source competitors to Microsoft Office. While I don't like the concept of .Net to begin with, it is good that Microsoft won't have it all to themselves.

Macs for Buesiness
David Berlind of ZDNet has a good article saying that Mac should be the alternatie to Windows, and not Linux. He points out many advantages that OS X has over both platforms, then points out some things he feels Apple needs to do to further their acceptance in the corporate world:
1. Availability of Mac OS X based systems from someone other than Apple.
2. Make OS X available for Intel machines.
3. Connect to Microsoft's Exchange server (seamlessly). This includes calendar.
4. Add keyboard shortcuts that are the same as in Windows. Or make an automatic "help lookup substituteä function.
I would like to see some feedback on these ideas. What do you think about them?

InDesign takes market share?
Remy Davison of IGM has an article about how InDesign is finally making inroads against Quark's Xpress. A big reason is that Quark has been dragging its feet on developing an OS X version. Of course, even if Quark for OS X came out today it would be 12 months or more before the majority of its third party plug-ins would work. Now Apple is even offering InDesign free with a purchase of a Duo G4.

Phones join file-sharing revolution
Soon according to a BBC article, you will be able to share music, games and images with other cell phone users. Apeera has announced technology that will do just that. Bet the music industry will fight this one too.

Quotes: Picasso, Twain
"I have three treasures which I hold and keep. The first is mercy; the second is economy; The third is daring not to be ahead of others. From mercy comes courage; from economy comes generosity; From humility comes leadership." - Lao Tzu

"Only put off until tomorrow what your are willing to die having left undone."
      - Pablo Picasso~

"If Man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve Man, but deteriorate the cat."
      - Mark Twain

"A person remembers not the hatred and criticism of a million people, but the love and confidence of just one. Don't regret upon what you could have done and prepare for what you have to do."
