Mac vs. PC
This is a terrific look at why a company or a school should use Macs instead of PCs. Check it out at:

Googlism
One of the latest Google products will tell you what Google thinks of you.
For example, I entered Apple Corp of Dallas and hit the search button. It said: "Apple Corp of Dallas is one user group that take dues via paypal". See what it thinks about you or your group at:
http://www.googlism.com/
e-mail hoaxes
I just got a new one. This one was claiming that AppleBees Restaurant would distribute a $50 gift certificate to anyone that forwarded the e-mail to nine people. Clicking on the included link to go to (http://www.applebees.com) brought up a pop-up that tells that it is a hoax. Just minimal checking would find this out. BUT everyone should be aware, that it isn't possible for ANYONE including Bill Gates to keep track of how many forwards you make. So let's not add to the clogging of the band width. Please.

Temporary DVDs
The New York Times has an article about a new DVD product that will self destruct in a set number of days. This would allow a "shareware" type product like for DVDs. Full story at:
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/11/14/technology/circuits/14disc.html
FTC targets deceptive spam
The FTC is trying to shut down spammers that are using deceptive tacts. All I can say is: "Its about time." Full story from Computer World at:

Yahoo announces "premium" e-mail service
Yahoo Inc. unveiled a premium version of its e-mail service that combines its existing a la carte paid-for offerings such as extra storage, access to other e-mail accounts and forwarding capabilities with new fare such as antispam tools and the ability to send larger attachments.
Yahoo Mail Plus is just the latest in the company's free-to-fee strategy, and is being offered to consumers for $29.99 a year. So another option to .Mac. [BEWARE: Yahoo is a notorious spam harvester!] Full story at: Yahoo delivers premium e-mail service

Apple Still # 1 in Education
Remy Davison of IGM points out that Apple still has the largest share of the installed base in the Education market. Hopefully Apple will be able to start growing it again. Full story at:

Webcasting Compromise Clears Congress
The Washington Post reported on November 15, that a bill passed both houses that makes compromises in the pricing policy for streaming audio on-line. This should enable more Internet radio stations to survive. Full story at:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A59427-2002Nov15.html
Mac in the medical world
David Smith of Medicine Weekly reported that Apple UK has a web page to show how Macs are being used in the medical community. Full story at:

Apple announces after-Thanksgiving special event
Apple is going to do what most retailers do on the Friday after Thanksgiving. That is to have special offers. Where Apple differs though is that are doing theirs in the evening instead of early morning (6 PM to Midnight). They will offer free stocking stuffers, a chance to wind a 15" iMac and other specials. Additionally, the online store will also make offers on their on-line store.
Thursby offers deals on TSSTalk, MacSOHO
Peter Cohen, of MacCentral is reporting on a special offer on its MacSOHO and TSStalk software products. The deals are available only as a download from the Thursby online store. Thursby has been doing software to connect to Macs & PCs for sometime. Full story at: http://maccentral.macworld.com/news/0211/18.thursby.php

Disk Sweeper for Jaguar
Who among us hadn't tried to wipe unneeded files off our hard drives. Now with 20-80 Gigs or more, it is harder than ever. The AACUG news desk has reminded me about the Omni Group's OmniDiskSweeper, which is now JAGified. It is a file utility that safely deletes unused files. It will quickly find and delet big, useless files, freeing up drive space. It highlights the biggest files and notes which are used by the system, so you don't accidentally delete important files. Sounds somewhat safer than some of its competitors. More info at:

Apple I
Do you have an old Apple I computer sitting in the closet? You might want to get it out.
In an article called "Rebuilding an Apple From the Past" (Wired News) "The Apple I is one of the hottest machines on the vintage computer market, but with less than 50 still in circulation, they are extremely hard to come by. An Apple I can cost anywhere between $15,000 and $50,000, depending on its condition, history and, of course, the economy."
More information is at: Briel's site http://www.vintagecomputer.tk/http://www.vintagecomputer.tk/, where you can see a picture of an Apple I
Remember, these were hand built by the owners, so that actual cases can vary a bit in design.

PDF Files are now readable via your OSX Browser
Thanks to the PDF Browser Plug-In which plugs a long-standing hole in the OS X experience, and does exactly what the name suggests - with it, you can view PDFs in your browser. I see a minor cosmetic issue with it, but I'm very happy to have it. Forget Pick of the Week; nominate Manfred Schubert for beatification. Got this from:

User Groups on Campus
Got this from the new manager of Apple Campus Group Relations.
Dear user group leaders,
There's something stirring on dozens of college campuses around the world. Students are creating amazing communities centered around their digital lives. In just the past 24 months, the number of new campus groups has skyrocketed. The level of enthusiasm, growth, and passion is incredible.
Not only do these groups provide excellent benefits to their respective campuses, but they also enhance the future of community user groups by developing a new generation of leaders and members.
To increase the excitement surrounding campus groups, we're pleased to offer several announcements. Watch for more news in the near future.
Information about all of the topics below is available at the Campus Groups section of Apple's User Group website.
Please feel free to forward this message to any campus group leaders or students who might be interested. We'll look forward to working with all user groups as we forge a strong future for technology communities on campuses. Please contact us with your suggestions and questions.
