Christmas Story:
How Elf-Milk Came To Be
Twas a long time ago . . .
Santa met with his elves one day to express his concern that the cattle were being
ignored as everyone was busy working in Santa's workshop. He feared that some of
the cattle might become lost and not find their way home at night to the warmth of
the barn. Winter was fast approaching and the nights were getting colder.
Elf Rhaphunzial stepped forward, "Santa, if it would please you I will watch
over them. Whilst I like working in your workshop I find that I am a bit clumsy with
tools and have a wee bit of trouble keeping up with my fellow elves. I enjoy working
with the cattle, and they with me."
So it was that Elf Rhaphunzial became the herdsman for Santa.
As winter approached, and the days grew colder, Elf Rhaphunzial found he was having
a problem. The milk would freeze to the sides of the pails as they were carried in
a wagon to the milkhouse. His solution was to stir the milk with a paddle, whilst
it was being carried,to keep it from freezing.
One day a tragic thing happened. Elf Rhaphunzial clumsily dropped the paddle he used
to stir the milk beneath the wheels of the wagon. It was broken to bits.
Frantically he ran to Santa, and his fellow elves, to explain his plight. Without
hesitation each elf grabbed a candy cane, ran to the wagon, and began to stir the
milk. As they stirred the milk a wonderful thing happened. It took on a glorious
pink color as the candy canes melted into the warm liquid. When they tasted it they
were thrilled at its sweet peppermint flavor.
Thus it is to this day . . .
In celebration, on the day Santa begins his journey, each elf takes a candy cane
and stirs the fresh milk recently gathered. At the evening meal Elf Milk, as it has
come to be known, is enjoyed by all.
Thus it was written by Elf Reuaknnyl.
Editors Note:
I happened to find Santa's internet address and made an inquiry to Mrs. Claus about
this story. She assured me that it was true. She shared a recipe with me to pass
along to Mom's who would like to make a near copy of Elf Milk for their children
to enjoy on Christmas Eve.
Into a gallon of milk add a tablespoon of peppermint extract. Add two or three tablespoons
of red food coloring. Stir with love and serve.
The Elf Milk that is enjoyed on the evening prior to Santa's journey has a very mild
peppermint flavor and a very light shade of pink. The amounts of extract and color
can be adjusted by Mom to suit individual taste.
Merry Christmas
