Adobe PageMill 2.0:
Classroom in a Book w/CD-ROM
Official training workbook developed by the staff of Adobe

Reviewed by Linda Cameron

Considering this book includes both Macintosh and Windows, the 195 pages is modest compared to some of the other computer related books I've seen. The book is divided into short lessons which can be worked on at the convenience of the person wanting to learn PageMill.

A CD-ROM is included which contains files which are to be used with this book as a giant tutorial. You need to have Adobe PageMill already or at least a DEMO version of it.

What you will learn with this book is:
* Web basics
* Creating a home page
* Adding links to and from the home page
* Enhancing an HTML page by formatting and adding images
* Using anchors
* Creating tables
* Creating a form
* Creating an image map
* Using frames
* Linking to external resources

Thinking I would try one or two of the lessons, I propped the book up on my desk next to my monitor. That part was a little tricky. I used a box lid which the book just fit into in the page open position and still be viewable. To use this book, you need to insert the CD-ROM which is included, copy some of the Lessons (which are individual folders) to your hard drive. Then boot up PageMill, which you should already have and is not included on the CD-ROM.

Then just follow the directions in the book. Another web browser is also useful for viewing your web pages in. PageMill shows them the way they should look, but different browsers can make them appear a little different.

I found the lessons were well organized and went at a nice pace. At the end of each lesson, a short quiz can be taken to see if the user really learned anything. Before the day was over, I had gone through more than a third of the book. By this time I was getting antsy to redo my own website. I am going to try and hold off until I finish this book though. I am sure the minute I redo the pages, I will go back and learn a few more tricks and want to do it all again.

You can think of this book as a giant tutorial that goes far and beyond the one you get with PageMill. I found it kind of fun and I am looking forward to finishing the whole book.
