Review by Phil Cutrara

This is the second edition that was written by Martin S. Matthews, and Carole Boggs Matthews. It contains seventy six more pages, and the contents include thirteen chapters.
At the last computer club meeting I used the book to troubleshoot several of our members problems. Many of the problems that we face with our computer have a familiar solution; but with the complexity of modern operating systems, the difficulty is often finding the steps to the solution. This book makes it all easy.

One of the problems a member had was getting the soundboard to work. It was a PNP (Plug and Play) soundboard, but there was no sound. I looked in the book under Multimedia, and in the Index for sound. The book offered this advice: You should let Windows 95 do the setup for you...all you have to do is plug in the card and start Windows 95.
Topics covered:
1. Top Ten FAQs,
2. Installing Windows 95,
3. What's New in Windows 95,
4. Setting Up Windows 95,
5. Using Windows 95,
6. File Management,
7. Printing,
8. Networking,
9. Communications,
10. Using the Internet
11. Using Internet Explorer,
12. Multimedia,
13. Windows 95 DOS,
14. The Registry and MS Plus!
Chapters 10, 12, and 13 are new
in this edition.

Windows did not recognize the board, so we followed these steps that were also in the book:
1. Click the Start button: choose Settings | Control Panel | Add New Hardware.
2. Click Next and then Yes to add new hardware.
3. Click No to search for the soundboard, and
4. Manually select the manufacturer and model by first Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
5. You will be shown a group of resource settings that you can have.
Windows considered the needs of the board, and determined the best ones.

The book also explained that if these settings do not match what is set on the board, you can either open the Device Manager in the System control panel, or you can change the settings on the board. In either case, click Next and follow the instructions to complete the installation.

There were other things we checked out like: was the jack in the speaker port, was the volume control on loud, was the soundboard software setup properly, was the volume settings set correctly in Windows 95, and did we want the sound Icon displayed on the Task Bar.

Here are some other sample answers from the book that were selected randomly from the chapter on the Registry. ? Windows 95 stores the recent history of Run commands somewhere. Where can I find it? The recent contents of the Run Open drop-down list are in the Registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \Windows \Current Version \Explorer \RunMRU. The contents are listed under Data opposite the names a,b,c, and so on.

? How can I find a specific setting in the Registry?

You can use Regedit to locate a setting:
1. Click the Start button, choose Run, type regedit, and click OK.
2. Open the Edit menu and choose Find.
3. Type a string to look up. For example, if you want to find the setting associated with the modem, open the Edit menu, choose Find, and type modem.
4. Click Find Next to find another instance of the same string, press F3.

I agree with the publisher that you Get a Whole Book of Answers for Less Than the Price of one support call, and it nicely compliments the Internet FAQ, and Tips on Windows 95 that can be captured from the WWW, and the Tech Net CD that our User Group gets. There are over 428 pages in the book, 398 contain questions, and answers. The pages also contain many illustrations, tips, and cautions.
The book Lists for $24.99, and was published by
Osborne McGraw-Hill on July, 1997.
