Review:
CorelDraw 8
A lot of value packed into one package
by Lynn
Wegley
Corel has always been known for giving it’s customers a lot in the package. CorelDraw
8 is no exception to this and there are actually 5 applications in one package. The
first one is CorelDraw 8, an illustration and page layout program. The second one
is Corel Photo-Paint, a photo editing and bitmap creation program. The Third is CorelTrace
8, a bitmap-to-vector conversion utility. Font Reserve, a font management program
is the fourth. Canto Cumulus Desktop 4.0 does “media manage-ment.”
. . . Additionally there are 4 third-party plugins,
1,200 high-quality clipart images, 200 digital photos, 1600 fonts to give you greater
value. Also there are animated GIF files, Web background themes, floating bitmap
objects, tiling textures and more items to help in web development. So there is a
lot of stuff on the 3 CDs in the package. One disk is the photo collection.
. . . I had a major problem with the software however
and that was the system requirements. It only requires Mac OS 7.6.1 or higher on
a machine with 32 MB of RAM with virtual memory en-abled. But that machine must be
a PowerMac. Something I don’t have. The recommended system is OS 8.1 with 64 MB of
RAM. The package comes with 6 books. A manual for each of the 4 major applications
(Draw, Photo-Paint, Canto Cumulus Desktop and Font Reserve. Also one book covering
the Corel Draw Libraries (graphic collection) and one that is Commercial Printing
Guide.
. . . Once again, I wasn’t able to try any of these
programs on my Centris 660 AV. As with most newer programs, the 68040 is left behind.
I asked both on Apple Corps of Dallas BBS and the TUMS BBS if anyone had any comments.
After 3 days, I had no responses. So the winner of this package will have to write
a complete review for the Gram. I will hold the registration card until we see the
review. It will be part of the drawing at a future meeting.
