Presto! Page Manager Suite
Gerard Kosobucki
Ever since I started using a computer, I have wanted to be able to scan information
into my system. But in the past, handheld scanners were too difficult or confusing
to use. This has changed now that the flatbed scanner has become an affordable piece
of equipment, and Presto! Page Manager Suite by NewSoft is the software that is a
perfect compliment to my Mustek 600IICD scanner.
Presto! Page Manager Suite allows me to scan the information into my computer and
manipulate it as I need it. It has 8 scanning programs that are fully integrated.
PageManager lets you scan direct to any application. You can store, copy, fax, print,
or e-mail anything you scan. PageImage will edit color images and add special effects.
Image Manager sorts and previews image files. Forms allows you to fill in any form
you scan. It automates paperwork. ColorFax sends and receives color image files.
PageFiler files documents in an electronic file cabinet. Wordlinx is a simple way
to scan directly into your favorite word processor or spreadsheet (Word or Excel).
BizCard scans business cards automatically for you to file. KaiÌs Power Goo
is a fun program that stirs, smears smudges and nudges images.
The system requirements are a 386 or higher computer, 8MB RAM minimum, 30 MB free
hard disk space, Windows 3.x or Windows 95 (Windows 95 required to operate KaiÌs
Power Goo), a Windows compatible fax-modem for fax and mail functions, a TWAIN-compliant
scanner, and a CD-ROM drive.
My computer is a 486DX/66mhz with 24MB RAM. It has a 1.2 GIG hard disk and Windows
95. The scanner is a Mustek 600 II CD with TWAIN.
Installation was a breeze. The on-screen instructions was simple to use. Just follow
the instructions and you would be done in no time at all. After installation, a Presto!
PageManager Suite program group is created.
The program has some very nice features: Built-in OCR to convert text to editable
text with support for 11 European languages, Drag-and-Drop to the Application Bar
to automatically launch a program, Customizable Scan Buttons to plug-in your favorite
applications, and Support for Microsoft Mail! And Lotus cc: Mail electronic mail
systems. The program also lets you edit and re-touch photos. JPEG IMAGE COMPRESSION
assists in processing image files and saves disk space.
Presto! BizCard eliminates the time-consuming job of typing business card data into
your computer. It quickly scans in cards, recognizes the text and sorts it into a
built-in database. Each card image can be saved for visual reference. You can use
Presto! BizCard as your database, export the contact data tou your favorite contact
manager/PIM, or print address lists and labels. It reads U.S. and International business
cards.
The reason I wanted a scanner was to scan in word documents and pictures or images,
but with this program, I received two added bonuses Ò Presto! Forms and Presto!
ColorFax. These are two programs that I use often. In fact, I donÌt know how
I lived without them. They are that handy
Presto! Forms is an electronic forms package that combines word processing and scanning
into one utility. After scanning the form, you can save it electronically and load
the image whenever you need to fill it out again. It allows you to type in all the
information into the form and then print it out on your pritner. One of the handy
features that this program has is its ability to place a check mark into boxes. For
example, if the form has a yes and no box, just point to the box and click. It will
put in a checkmark for you. How it does this I donÌt know.
Presto! ColorFax transmits an image file to a remote location either a computer or
a stand alone fax machine. It transmits BMP,TIFF, JPEG, or TGA format files. It allows
you to send and receive color image files,.send files from other applications, schedule
fax transmissions when telephone rates are lower, and store frequently dialed fax
numbers in an electronic Phonebook.
