Kids Pick the Best of the Web "Top 10"

Cyberkids have spoken. And Nickelodeon is at the top of their list followed by Disney and GeoCities. Kids in grades 1-12 were asked to nominate their favorite Web sites for fun and learning as part of the "Kids Pick the Best of the Web" project sponsored by the American Association of School Librarians and KidsConnect, an online question-answer service for students.

More than 800 children submitted their favorite sites. The "Top 10" based on the number of "votes:"
1.Nickelodeon
2.Disney
3.GeoCities
4.Yahoo
5.National Basketball Association
6.Public Broadcasting System
7.Worm World
8.ESPN SportsZone
9.Sports Illustrated for Kids
10.South Park

The "Top 10" are posted with links on the American Library Association Web site at http:/www.ala.org/kidspick.
Said one Nickelodeon fan, "This Web site is informative, and helps me stimulate my mind." A PBS supporter noted, "It has many educational purposes for kids of all ages, and many fun things to do as well." Another cited Sports Illustrated for Kids "because it get kids opinions on athletes and actually listens to them, and the games are educational."

Names of 100 children who submitted sites were selected at random to receive the Encarta*98 Encyclopedia Deluxe compliments of the Microsoft Corporation. Their libraries will receive Microsoft FrontPage*. Those selected will be notified by e-mail by June 12. The names can also be found at http://www.ala.org/kidspick/list.html

Children with questions about using the Internet and other topics can get help from KidsConnect. A volunteer school library media specialist will provide assistance, usually within two school days. This free service is sponsored by the American Association of School Librarians, a division of the American Library Association, in partnership with the Information Institute of Syracuse, Syracuse University (N.Y.). The project is underwritten by Microsoft Corporation.
