Vacation Season...
So you're headed for the beach, the river, the mountains or just the back yard blanket,
don't forget there's lots of good stuff to take along. You can bet that while those
Mac users sweat Macworld in New York city this July, this editor will be sipping
a sip and watching the passersbys from the veranda of the Kanapali Beach resort in
wonderful Maui. Since I don't do sand, and seldom do sun my idea of great surfing
will be on this old laptop!
Don't forget that the telephone lines run almost everywhere these days and you can
stay connected with friends, family and even business if you like. There's also fun
for the young folks after they've had their fill of planned activities and just want
to get inside for a little break from vacation. Here are some interesting pointers
you may want to take along:
Before vacation... Chart Your Course, by learning
about latitude and longitude while you plan your summer vacation. Try charting distances
to visualize the globe. http://www.fi.edu/qa98/me6/
Take some toys... check out Slinky Physics
at Kelly Robinson's and Sherry Miller's Slinky page. You (or your young vacationers)
will learn things like: Physics Experiments with the Slinky!!; Slinky walking speed
vs. angle; Slinky in the second Harmonic... and other Slinky stuff!

Take along a good book... a Journal
of Book Reviews publishes reviews of current books in education, organized into fourteen
departments, each with its own Area Editor. The overall Editors are Gene V Glass
(Arizona State University) and Nicholas Burbules (University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign).

Headed for the Amusement Park... Ever
wonder how roller coasters stay on their tracks or why pendulum rides cause motion
sickness? As you shuttle through the Annenberg/CPB Project's newest exhibit, Amusement
Park Physics, you can experience the thrills of an amusement park--while learning
how physics plays a role in the fun.
See how various rides are constructed and how the laws of physics figure into the
excitement and safety of roller coasters, bumper cars, and carousels.
Can you create a thrill ride that's exciting without being dangerous? Construct your
own roller coaster--and see if it passes the safety inspection. And if you're a
fan of bumper cars, you can learn what factors influence how your fellow drivers'
cars will move when you bump into them on the course.
You can also explore related Web sites on the history of amusement parks and the
laws of physics. All this fun and you don't have to wait in line!
Visit this wonderful interactive learning exhibit at:

inspired by Mechanical Universe...and Beyond, a video series in the Annenberg/CPB
Multimedia Collection. The Annenberg/CPB Projects is a project of the Annenberg Foundation
and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Above all, have a safe and happy summer. Don't forget to write!
