Repetitive Strain Injuries Can Be Prevented
Excerpt from Pamphlet by Sharon J. Butler

Sharon Butler sent us an email asking if we’d like a copy of her new pamphlet titled as above. Of course I said “Sure.” (I’ll have her pamphlet at our upcoming meeting for members to browse through.) The following is an excerpt:

How to Stretch Properly

Pay attention to the sensations you feel as you stretch. This helps you develop a sense of what kinds of exercises or stretches you need, and how often to practice them.

Never stretch beyond your comfort level. Overworked tissues will recover more quickly when they are stretched gently.

Stretching is most effective in the mild to moderate range of sensation.

Maintain a mild stretch until the stretching sensation lessons or disappears completely. This will indicate that the tissues that were being stretched have lengthened.

If the stretching sensation grows stronger at any point in the stretch, reduce the intensity of the stretch until you return to a mild range of sensation.
