A Macworld to Remember
by Ken Gruberman

I've been attending the Macworld Expo in San Francisco, off and on, since 1989... but the January 2000 edition had some real surprises in store for both of us. Daphne attended a few Macworld's with me since we got married in 1991, but usually as just an observer or a traveling companion: the lure of Nordstrom's flagship store could usually overpower Moscone's on any given day. Not this time.

Waiting for the doors to open

__ This time, Daphne was involved in Macworld doings as much as I. She had taken the initiative and authored a grant proposal for two schools under the User Group Academy Grant Proposal program. $25,000 in grant money was available to any user group with nerve enough to jump through the many hoops placed in their way by the (normally) complicated grants process. The groups whose grant programs were deemed worthy - and their applications correctly filled out - would receive the money at the Macworld User Group Breakfast. In addition, awards for both the Newsletter and Web Site competitions would also be handed out at this event, followed directly by the now-legendary Steve Jobs Keynote address.
__ I had never been to any of the Apple User Group Breakfast's over the years, nor attended any Jobs keynote. Standing in line at 6 a.m. on a cold San Francisco morning never appealed to my sense of sloth, so I missed them year after year. I soon learned why so many user group members from around the country tried as hard as they could to get into the User Group Breakfast at the Marriott: all attendees received "VIP" passes to the Steve Jobs keynote without having to wait in line!
