UG POLLSTER RESULTS:
Browser Wars

Part 1: Which browser are you using this moment?

40% voted: Internet Explorer 5.0
27.3% voted: Netscape higher than 4.x
21.8% voted: Netscape 4
5.5% voted: iCab
1.8% voted: Netscape 3.x

Part 2: If you use both, select a set of options:

24.5% voted: Explorer a lot, Netscape a little
22.6% voted: Netscape a lot, Explorer a little
7.5% voted: Explorer a lot, iCab a little
5.7% voted: BOTH about EQUALLY
5.7% voted: iCab a lot, Explorer a little

3.6% evidently didn't understand the concept of voting, because they didn't actually vote but left comments instead.
34% did not register an opinion on part 2 of the poll.

Explorer wins. Big surprise.

Sampling of comments left by voters...

Lots of people included a comment along with their votes in the form. Many said they have to use "all broswers" as part of their work. Others were either MS or NS, with very little inbetween.

  • How about a poll on MAIL programs. Outlook Express, Netscape, AOL, etc and I'll guess many others like Eudora are used, some of which do not support HTML. That sould be queried as part of the poll.
  • I do web development, so I need to have both IE 5.5 and Netscape Communicator 4.7 for testing. I find that IE has many fewer quirks than Netscape. Netscape has a number of bugs (like their problems with text overflowing cells in nested tables)
  • 4.75 is not a very stable application. If it were not for the encrcription I would return to 4.6
  • Explorer 5.0's folders feature is what sold me on using it almost exclusively, plus the Scrapbook feature is a great idea.
  • I prefer iCab, but it is accused of causing a curious hesitation to the OS when running. Mouse clicks and drags or key strokes don't respond for 2-3 seconds, as if the Mac is preoccupied on some distant task. I haven't nailed it down but it's not happenin
  • i prefer not to use IE
  • I refuse to put a Microsoft application on my Macintosh. IE was created to dominate web browsing on Windows. Now they've messed up Java, and Netscape gets the blame.
  • I try not to use IE because the latest version is claimed to ping Microsoft each time you log on. Who knows what else it does... I'm getting so much spam from MSN, I'm beginning to believe that IE uploads your email address book each time you log on.
  • I use Explorer most, sometimes OmniWeb, and sometimes iCab. I almost never use fizzila.
  • I used OmniWeb for a while in Mac OS X. Maybe that should be an additional choice.
  • I usually use Opera for the PC, I have been using Java browsers more and more, on Mac and Linux, and "Other" browsers on Amiga.
  • I wish someone would tell America Online to remove their browser from their software and let us use our own choices.
  • i would put omniweb on os x beta but not an option on the poll. i use ie almost exclusively, and icab some. i haven't used netscape in ages, they just got too far behind, and ie 5 is more of a mac app than navigator or mozilla.
  • I've always liked Netscape better, however, IE, has worked more smoothly of late. I'm looking forward to trying out the latest version of Netscape.
  • iCab is by far the best browser around. I can't wait until a final release is made.
  • IE 5 in OS X PB is superior to IE I use in OS 8.6
  • Netscape 4.7.6 and the previous versions have been the most effective and productive applications for us. Esp to teach a new user, you only show them one application. Very cohesive and I know that all of the functions of any web page will work consistently
  • Netscape needs to get better!
  • Internet Explorer opens graphics faster than Netscape.
  • Netscape takes much longer to boot and seems to render slower. Also, it crashes more than IE5. I'm no fan of Microsoft... but they've made a better product here. Hopefully Netscape 6 will address this situation soon.
  • Netscape Communicator seems to work well for me. Am I missing something by not useing other browsers??
  • OmniWeb looks promising
  • Some Web sites open on Netscape which do not open on Internet Explorer
  • When ie is the only choice, I will quit surfing.
  • They both suck

interesting!
