Hardware Topics
- Computer Basic Maintenance - For both the newbie
and the more experienced. How to set up your hard drive, record keeping, file management,
backups etc. Old timers as well as newer users find this a good one.
- Lightening Strikes Twice - Protecting your equipment
from power surges and brownouts. Get the stats from your local power company (if
you can) to show what you are exposed to in your locality. Check with the phone company
also. Try calling Safeware (the insurance company) for some stats. Then develop a
preventative program for your members.
- Digital Cameras - groups invite members to bring in their digital cameras
so members without cameras can get a look and feel of what's out there. Get a photographer
or graphics member to explain some of the intricacies of the cameras and the field
of digital photography. You'll want to show both cable connections to the camera,
as well as camera media and how to use it.
- The Cleaning Crew - Keeping your computer shining
clean and healthy. A how to demo on cleaning computer, keyboard, mouse, CD reader,
CDs, disks, drives, printers, monitors, etc. Explain about the types of compressed
air, cleaning clothes, alcohol, etc. Editors Ink, here at UGF has a great article
on keeping your CDs clean. Download it and send it out as a teaser for your meeting.
- What You Always Wanted To Know But Were Afraid To Ask Night
- Hardware: Anonymously submitted questions to be answered by a panel of experienced
users. Good to prime the pump on this one with some questions you know people want
answered but seldom want to identify themselves as asking.
- Open Stage - groups often have a question and answer session beginning
15-20 minutes prior to the regular meeting. Sometimes in conjunction with an Early
Bird sig for new users or folks with new applications. It is usually very popular.
Also gets folks to the meeting on time!
- Hardware Upgrades - An annual favorite. After a
discussion on whether to upgrade or buy new, actually demo putting in a new motherboard.
JEFNY says, "The fun is to see if we can get the computer working properly and
then run bench tests to see if it was worth it. (386 to 486 or pentium)." He
says a local vendor has actually provided them with the hardware to play with in
exchange for a plug in their newsletter. This would be good for any type computer.
Special thanks to JEFNY@aol.com for this program
idea.
- Scanners & Scanning - hook up a scanner and
demonstrate some of the special tricks involved in getting it to run first time,
and every time. You might tie in a scanning session, and demonstrate plug-ins for
the popular painting/drawing programs. Show how to scan, optimize and prepare a photo
for online delivery.
Remember: The help you get is equal to the help you give.
