Favorite Meeting Programs
Over the years we've asked user group members from all over the world to relate
their favorite meeting topics. Here's where we keep adding them.
___ Below are what we consider to be "General"
meeting topics. At right is an index listing of other 'specialty' topics.
.
- Genealogy Night - Using your computer to keep your family history The
interest in this will really surprise you. Often a repeat request. Check in your
own group for one or more members who are already doing this. This is an especially
popular program and garnered a number of positive comments at the chat from groups
who have done one.
- Kids Day - Reviews and demos of Kids CDs, games, etc. with handouts showing
age appropriate. Especially great when early enough to let parents, grandparents,
etc. have them for their holiday gift buying. (This program also got nods from chat
attendees who had held one.)
- Tips & Tricks and Pointers - For this one, be SURE to have a written
handout, or better yet publish it in your newsletter. Publish after the meeting as
an incentive for people to really read the newsletter... publish for the current
meeting, and the newsletter IS the handout. This is one of the most requested repeats
in many groups. Tips and tricks can be gathered from many sources. And do give credit
where credit is due.
- The Cleaning Crew - Keeping your computer shining clean and healthy. A
how to demo on cleaning computer, keyboard, mouse, CD reader, CDs, disks, drives,
printers, monitors, etc. Explain about the types of compressed air, cleaning clothes,
alcohol, etc. Editors Ink, here at UGF has a great article on keeping your CDs clean.
Download it and send it out as a teaser for your meeting.
- Photos & Your Computer - Getting that shoebox of photos out of the
closet and into your computer. How and what to do with them when you them there.
Few of us have access to a digital camera. A bit more have a scanner. Be sure to
include something for everyone. Maybe send everyone home with a pix of themselves
(and the group) on disk.
- Is Your Computer a Pain in the Neck? - There are a LOT of resources for
this and you may find yourself with some really kewl door prizes. You might invite
an eye doctor to your meeting to talk about computer glasses; a physical therapist
for hand and wrist exercises; or a neurologist for an over-all view. Have a look
at ZAP! from Peachpit Press. It is absolutely great for this subject. BTW, Peachpit
Press will send you a review copy and gives great discounts to user groups. Show
ways to economically keep an ergonomically healthy computer station.
- The Annual Picnic - Let's not forget that good ole standby. How about
you groups that do this emailing us some ideas on the organizing of a great picnic.
- Auction Night - Members bring in old software, hardware and for auction.
Many groups do this on a regular basis. "The nitty gritty of auctions"
coming soon to our resource library.
- What You Always Wanted To Know But Were Afraid To Ask Night - Anonymously
submitted questions to be answered by a panel of experienced users. Good to prime
the pump on this one with some questions you know people want answered but seldom
want to identify themselves as asking. As a subtopic here; groups often have a question
and answer session beginning 15-20 minutes prior to the regular meeting. Sometimes
in conjunction with an Early Bird sig for new users or folks with new applications.
It is usually very popular. Also gets folks to the meeting on time!
- The Taxman Cometh - A great program to have in January. Quicken is popular
here as are other programs. Ask the dealers for handouts late in the year so you
have them on hand for January.
- Special Best/Worst Night - Your members will LOVE
this suggestion sent in by Vince Furlong!
- Need assistance with one of the ideas? Email us for help. Remember, send us one
or two ideas of your own so we can do this again soon.

Each new idea will be added to the top of this page!
Remember: The help you get is equal to the help you give.
