- It Was an SRO Affair at NECC
They wrote fairy tales. Composed music. Solved "The Mystery of the Wet Socks." And in their spare time, teachers attending the 25th annual National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) in New Orleans learned how valuable an educational experience documentary filmmaking can be.
In all, the teachers who packed the Apple hands-on classroom thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn first-hand what 1 to 1 learning is all about. During workshops taught by Apple Distinguished Educators, attendees worked with the latest Apple technology. Using iBook computers in a wireless classroom, they learned how iLife applications--iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, and GarageBand--can thoroughly engage students in social studies, language arts, and science projects. And they were among the first educators to evaluate two new Apple solutions--the Classroom Documentary Filmmaking Solution and Science CSI--and the first to see Apple Remote Desktop 2 in action. - Ascending to New Documentary Heights
In the next documentary film project your class undertakes, you probably won't go quite as far-or as high--as Michael Brown did in "Farther than the Eye Can See." To tell the story of the first blind climber to conquer the world's highest peak, Brown traveled to Tibet and scaled Everest beside Erik Weihenmayer
For Brown, who edited the twice-Emmy-nominated film in Final Cut Pro, telling stories like Wiehenmayer's is ultimately more rewarding than scaling mountains. "I've always been intrigued by storytellers," Brown tells us, "and I'm always hoping to do something that makes people think."
Like Brown, students in classes around the country are making people think by creating documentaries of their own. Take a look at some of their work; then explore the solutions we offer for classroom documentary filmmaking. Apple EDU issued: 7/11/2004
- Apple Committed to Universal Access for All Learners
In addition to its many other resources, Mac OS X v10.3, "Panther," offers a collection of learning tools that some of us may never have to use but that others will find immensely valuable.
Did you know, for example, that QuickTime video or audio can include an auxiliary text track for closed captioning? Or that by using the Universal Access System Preference dialog, you can activate a variety of accessibility features offering significant benefit to those with visual, hearing, learning, or mobility disabilities?
For more information about the many tools Mac OS X provides for students with learning differences, please spend some time on our new Accessibility in Education website. Apple EDU issued: 7/11/2004
- He'd Done the Math
No matter how he crunched the numbers, Dr. Joe Lewis just couldn't get them to add up to the solution he desperately wanted for his school district. Putting laptops into the hands of 15,000 students and 1,000 teachers seemed an impossible dream.
But working with Apple, Dr. Lewis was able to find a way to accomplish his goal and save his school system money at the same time. Apple, says Dr. Lewis, "helped us do some creative financing. In essence, we were able to fund the first year of the program at a quarter of our estimated costs."
In fact, Pennsylvania's Bethlehem Area School District is already seeing "some extremely positive results" after implementing its technology initiative. And it's looking forward to even more. Apple EDU issued: 7/11/2004
