When Pittsburgh-based blogger and freelance graphic designer Justine Ezarik discovered an inches-thick bulging envelope in her mailbox, she was initially excited by the prospect of receiving a gift. Instead, it was a 300-page iPhone service bill from AT&T, Ezarik's first monthly statement for the new and much-touted service.

Mitch Wagner, Oct 19 -- We got great feedback from defenders of the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) 810 tablet following my dismissive review of the device after a five-minute evaluation at the Web 2.0 Summit. N810 advocates said it's not a smartphone; it's a completely different class of device: A Web access device, MP3 and video player, VoIP phone, Internet video chat machine, GPS, and more. After months of barring third-party developers from working on the iPhone, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is rolling out the welcome mat. In an open letter on the company's Web site, Jobs confirmed reports that a software development kit (SDK) for the iPhone will be released to developers next year. Come February, budding iPhone developers will be able to obtain a software development kit that will give them the tools and the know-how to create safe and reliable applications for the iPhone without having to depend on "jailbreak" programs. That means iPhone users will be able to add applications they can trust without voiding their warranties... CNET News.com - San Francisco,CA,USA

Apple's iPhone hasn't made an obvious dent in the market share of either handset competitors or carriers that compete with AT&T. But it has hit those other companies with something else unexpected -- and unwelcome: The iPhone has sharply raised consumer awareness about the issue of locked cell phones. Most U.S. carriers profit from consumer ignorance about the locking issue. But the iPhone controversy is changing all that. Millions of cell phone users are suddenly talking about cell phone locking and asking themselves, "Why is my phone locked?" And that's a good thing. It's time consumers demand unlocked cell phones from their carriers. PC World - USA

By Larry Greenemeier -- Greenpeace this week ripped into Apple for failing to make "early progress" with the iPhone toward the company's stated goals for ecofriendliness. The report touched off a debate over whether the hugely popular mobile device is safe for its users and for the environment (after the iPhone is tossed into the recycling bin). Apple responded by reiterating its intent to give itself a year to clean up its act. End of debate? Unlikely. IPhone sales continue to be robust, but the charges indicate growing concern with toxins in technology. Scientific American - USA
