Well, now we've heard everything -- a zoom lens for the iPhone. iPhone World - Montreal,QC, CAnada
At the end of Apple's event to unveil its iPhone software roadmap this morning, Steve Jobs served up another "one more thing" surprise. Venture capitalist kingpin John Doerr came on stage to announce a $100 million fund, aimed at start-ups developing software for the iPhone. After a heartfelt tribute to Jobs -- he invited the 200 or so attendees to join him in "saluting the world's greatest entrepreneur." -- he made an audacious forecast. Noting the iPhone's size, flexibility and ability to deliver personalized, location-based services, he said that the device would one day be "bigger than the personal computer." BusinessWeek - USA
High-flying venture capitalist firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers placed a $100 million bet on Apple's iPhone on Thursday by creating the iFund. KPCB partner Matt Murphy will manage that gamble, by heading up a team that will invest in game-changing applications for the mobile Internet. His group will include KCPB co-founder John Doerr and Sun Microsystems co-founder Bill Joy, along with high-ranking advisers from Apple. CNET News.com - San Francisco, CA, USA
Some Apple press events are full of surprises. Others are...surprisingly dull. The news involved a lot of things that were not shocking-in some cases because of leaks in the last few days, and in some cases because they simply made sense. (Even the implementation of Microsoft's ActiveSync on the iPhone is just so darn logical that it felt natural and obvious.) PC World - USA
A colleague scolded me for applauding during Apple's press conference to announce iPhone 2.0, next-generation firmware that will bring a host of enterprise features and support for a native software development kit (SDK) to iPhone and iPod touch. In my defense, I kept my pen and pad in my hands while the room went berserk over Apple's deal with Microsoft to bring an extraordinary array of Exchange Server connectivity to iPhone. Apple's announcement that it will start selling a version of the iPhone targeted to businesses in June is a step in the right direction -- perhaps a giant step. But your business's information-technology department still has a few reasons not to give you an iPhone yet. Wall Street Journal - USA
The iPhone is a monster. Apple will likely sell more than 10 million of the pricey gadgets this year, which combines a wireless phone, iPod and a mobile Web browser. Now, the Cupertino, Calif.-based computer maker is hoping many of those sales will come from businesses as it starts to pack business-friendly features into an update of the iPhone software due this June. Forbes - NY, USA
Sun Microsystems Inc. said Friday it will build a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) for Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iTouch, now that the iPhone's software developer's kit (SDK) beta version has been released. Computerworld - Framingham,MA, USA
Apple is readying significant enhancements to the software in its iPhone handset for later this year. The company takes cues from both the business and consumer worlds, finally letting third-party developers in on the action to bring games, utilities, and other apps to the phone. These impending changes promise to radically transform the daily experience for iPhone users. Based on what we've seen of Apple's Microsoft Exchange integration and our first-hand look at the new development kit, here's what you can expect to see when the upgrade becomes available in June.
