• Best Searching for images: Best so far is Google's Image Search and their "advanced" search feature where you can specify sizes for images. Then there's Yahoo's Image Search which claims 50,000 pictures but really returns search results very similar to Google's. Yahoo also has an advanced image search page. Alta Vista also allows to search the web for pictures. It also has a parent control, so it safe for kids to use. AltaVista gave us some problems so we really don't recommend it. Last, is the Lycos Media Search which claims its own database of 75,000+ pictures; but I believe it uses Google's search for the web.
• Open Directory - Business: Arts and Entertainment: Photography ... - Stock Photography, stock photos for graphic and web from dmoz.org one of the most trusted web directories in the world. Also see: Architectural - Photos department.
• Picture Overload - Wikipedia: Public domain image resources has an extensive list of resources organized by topic. Visual overload.
• Ernest von Rosen's Amgmedia.com object photos , unky stuff, table top objects, desktop objects, fruits and vegetables, and flowers -- probably one of the most tasteful we've seen. Please give credit to photographer Ernest von Rosen --
• The Library of Congress American Memory - We don't need a description of this one. Very broad, very deep.
• USDA On Line Photography Service - Hundreds of photographs organized by topic. Scroll to near the bottom of the page for list of topics. Some nice. Some not so nice.
• Fish and Wildlife: Try the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
• Berkeley Digital Library Photo Collection - More than 80,000 photos, mostly of plants, animals, people and landscapes. See also the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology catalogued images
• Digital Librarian Digital Librarian is maintained by Margaret Vail Anderson, a librarian in Cortland, New York -- is quite frankly UNBELIEVABLE.
• PixelGirl - While not necessarily stock photography, the PixelGirl dishes up an overwhelming number of links to totally off-the-wall sites where you'll find a lot of eye-candy.
• Detroit Free Press Photos section has a number of great photos. I'm not sure about use of the photos, but there's a lot of fun here... like the Detroit Auto Show shoot
• Creating Online -- Pamela Auer Roth, owner of CreatingOnline.com, has a passion for anything creative, especially photography, graphics, and web design. Another blog driven photo site with lots to offer.
• Free Photos Bank Nicely crafted but limited selection of amateur photos.
• Pictures Free Download - Photos 1200x800 free download for personal use, with the name of the homepage free download for commercial use.
• FreeStockPhotos.com - Free Stock Photos Free Stock Photos offers a collection of free stock photography for personal or commercial use in the following categories: Animals, Christian, Egypt, Israel, Near East, Rome, Scenery, Sky, Weather, Wildflowers, and Plants. from Daniel Speck
• Photos dot com Stock Photos - Royalty-Free Stock Photos by Subscription at Photos.com - Download royalty-free stock photos and high resolution stock images at one low cost at the best among stock photography subscription services websites.
• Black Cat - The Stock Photo Gallery is a collection of photos geared toward textures and background objects for beginner and experienced designers alike, some do nicely for general displaying purposes.
• ShutterStock : Royalty Free Stock Photography Photos - Shutterstock provides Royalty free imags, stock photos, ... With ShutterStock you can download up to 750 images per month
• Free Clipart, Images, Photos, Fonts, Icons, Backgrounds - original royalty-free stock photos which you can download and use
• morgueFile : where photo reference lives - This morgue file contains free high resolution digital stock photography. Click on Image archive to view and download photos
• Webshots dot com has a huge collection, all supposedly free for registering. Somehow we believe there's more to it than that.
• Art Meat Blog ... bills itself as "free art for bloggers" and offers some rather unusual images; some of which are striking but of little use.
• Free Photo Over 67,000 photos free for noncommercial use.
• Open Photo Gallery of photos organized by subject with search ability. Use Creative Commons licensing.
• PD Photo - Large gallery of public domain photos, most taken by the site owner, are categorized by subject.
• Pixel Perfect Digital - Organized by subject with search capability - photos have title and information; plus free Image Archives with a list of free picture sites
• Deviant Art At this blog, the author admits that it does not support some browsers. However the site is still usable and there are lots of farily nice images there ... Animals; Classical; Food; Household Items; Macro Shots; Men; Nature; Objects; People; Places; Plants; Technical; Women and others...(See: Carolina Closeup)
• gimp-savvy.com Photo Archive: "The photo archive at Gimp-Savvy.com has more than 27,000 free photos and images, consisting of over 2.5 Gbytes of data." Very nice collection with indexing.
• NASA NASA of course is one of the very first sites online with photo archives. It's the Federal government, so the photos were paid for by American tax payers. The NASA JSC Digital Image Collection has more than 9000 press release photos spans the manned space program, from Mercury to the STS-79 Shuttle mission. The collection includes a full text search." NASA should be acknowledged as the source of the material.
• Images of American Political History: "The intent of this collection is to support the teaching of American political history by providing quick access to uncopyrighted images for inclusion in teaching materials. All images are strongly believed to be in the public domain."
• Trip out to Africa - Wildlife Pictures, Wildlife Resources, wildlife stock photos are available to download. Please credit photographer and site.
• Stock Photos about Architecture for Journalists The photos in this section are free-to-use as long as crediting them to their photographer/owner. All JPEG files are in RGB format and have a sufficient quality for printing. (See their annual galleries)
• New York Public Library Digital Gallery provides access to over 275,000 images digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, illustrated books, printed ephemera, and more -- like this great picture of a Rambler Model forty-four
• Aarin free stock photos offers free images for personal and commercial use. Sample
• Geek Philosopher is a source for royalty free stock photography, wallpapers, and desktop backgrounds including children, people, sports, fruit, vegetables, medical, airplanes, flowers, outdoors, sky, sunsets, clouds, stars and planets, water, domestic animals, butterflies, insects, grazing animals, birds, horses, famous paintings, music, texture, tile, aspirin, clocks, cheap plastic makeup, costume masks, cup of coffee, food, water bottle, hotwheels, jacks, potato chips, and sea shells photographs. Some of the shots are wonderful!
• Image*After limited, but growing collection of mostly unusual photographic material like this monster photo of the human eye YIKES!
• Pixel Perfect Digital collection of free high resolution stock photos and illustrations. Review the Terms of Use before downloading. All of the images are high quality JPG's. 3,590 Files in 122 Categories, with current disk usage of 3,781.07 MB (Driven by blog software, links are not very clear. This is the first page of a slideshow.
• TMB Free Webmaster Resources is a small site that thinks it's big. They have a limited by interesting collection of photos, wallpapers, backgrounds and textures. How can you resist this!
• StockVault.net you'll have to dig, but this is a beautiful site full of great free stock photos that are available for download in the following categories: Architecture, Industrial, Miscellaneous, Nature - Animals, Nature - Other, and Textures. See these 3D constructions
• YotoPhoto is a search engine for free-use stock photographs. Some images are in the Public Domain while others have generous Creative Commons (or similar) licensing.
• Stock.XCHNG is yet another blog driven collection with categories of free stock photos by (they claim) more than 9,000 users.
• One Odd Dude has some fairly nice shots.
• Free Images - Free Stock Photos - More than 2100 free digital photographs for DTP web and design use.
• Get The Pixel - Free JPG images without copyright for web designers and graphic designers.
• Lightning Photo Gallery - A striking gallery of lightning photos.
• Mike Peralta Photography - Santa Cruz photographer specializing in Surf photography in California, Mexico and Hawaii.
• Photo-Guide.com - Pictures, Photographs and Photo Resources. - A searchable guide to photos, pictures, wallpaper and even screensavers. Categories include people, animals, sports, nature, celebrity photos...
• Scenic Pic's - Gallery of landscape digital photographs in jpg formats.
• Underwater Photography - Aquatic Images by Robert Darmanin - Underwater photo galleries and info.
