Of course it's effective -- it is produced by the people who make the software. This book is most effective when used in concert with the manuals and user guide provided with Photoshop.
If you're already using Photoshop, and have at least a working knowledge of the program, then move on to Real World Photoshop, or simply the Visual Quickstart Guide. But if you're new to Photoshop, or would like specific step by step training, then this is the one. Many people learn better by sitting down and walking through structured lessons. For these people, the heavy-duty books and the tips-and-tricks books will only be a source of frustration. And although only specific projects are featured in the lessons, the Adobe team manages to include nearly all of Photoshop's features and functions. With this book, you learn by progressing through a series of hands-on projects that build on your growing Photoshop knowledge.
Simple step-by-step instructions make sure you don't miss any detail of the operation, then review questions at the end of each chapter help you 'burn in' that knowledge. All of the work files, including a completed example of each project, are contained on the companion CD. They're clearly labeled and easy to use. Best of all, the course is self-paced. You can sit at your leisure and take the lessons.
If you've owned previous classroom books don't worry, this one is completely revised to cover all of Photoshop CS's new features including the new file browser, nonsquare pixel support, Layer comps for creating design variations, and more. The book starts with an introductory tour of the software and then progresses on through lessons on everything from Photoshop's interface to more complex topics like color management, Web graphics, and photo retouching.
I use the classroom books since version 5 to help structure my Photoshop class at JMU. This book makes learning Photoshop from scratch easy and effective.
