Anyone considering the relationship between technology and humanity has probably either read or heard of Marshall McLuhan. A careful student of media, a prolific lecturer and author, and the creator of such phrases as "global village" and "the medium is the message," McLuhan (1911-1980) merits a freshly creative and accessible examination today, as technology speeds ahead and forces us to reconsider our relationship with it.
Everyman's McLuhan is just that. W. Terrence Gordon, McLuhan's official biographer, has here deciphered and distilled McLuhan's career; his words are accompanied by colorful and innovative illustrations that apply McLuhan's and Gordon's ideas to the realities of 21st century technology and media.
Every spread, whether covering the iPod or Donald Trump, illuminates McLuhan's prophetic ideas with contemporary visual cues that will resonate with all readers.
Those familiar with McLuhan will appreciate this continuation of the original visual metaphor of the 1967 Penguin title, The Medium is the Massage, while McLuhan novices will be engaged and fascinated by his timeless ideas as manifested in the daily happenings of our lives.
Everyman's McLuhan furthers a dialogue that was important when McLuhan was alive, but is even more relevant today as the line blurs between the human community and the technologies upon which we rely.
W. Terrence Gordon is a linguist and intellectual historian. He has taught in six Canadian universities and written and/or edited eighteen books. His 1997 McLuhan biography, commissioned by the McLuhan family, has garnered international acclaim.

Essential McLuhan
by Marshall McLuhan, Eric McLuhan, Frank Zingrone
This collection of articles and excerpts from McLuhan's most important books is a comprehensive and accessible overview of the musings of the "Patron Saint of the Digerati". It includes substantial passages from my favorite McLuhan book The Gutenberg Galaxy (a brilliantly provocative academic treatise about the history and consequences of writing and printing), as well as many articles and interviews you wouldn't find in any of his previously published books anyway. This book is highly recommended. Essential McLuhanby Marshall McLuhan (Author), Eric McLuhan -- Paperback: 407 pages -- Publisher: Basic Books
The Global Village: Transformations in World Life and Media in the 21st Century
by Marshall McLuhan, Bruce R. Powers
This book probes the same theme from different angles, but with the same McLuhanesque all-over-the-place reasoning. Powers seems to have had a leavening effect on the master's breathless prose and extravagant presentation. The book should provoke people to think, if nothing else. For McLuhan collectors.
